The problem of indexing path queries
\nin semistructured\/XML databases has re-
\nceived considerable attention recently, and
\nseveral proposals have advocated the use of
\nstructure indexes as supporting data struc-
\ntures for this problem. In this paper, we
\ninvestigate ecient update algorithms for
\nstructure indexes. We study two kinds of
\nupdates | the addition of a subgraph, in-
\ntended to represent the addition of a new
\nle to the database, and the addition of
\nan edge, to represent a small incremental
\nchange. We focus on three instances of
\nstructure indexes that are based on the no-
\ntion of graph bisimilarity. We propose al-
\ngorithms to update the bisimulation parti-
\ntion for both kinds of updates and show how
\nthey extend to these indexes. Our experi-
\nments on two real world data sets show that
\nour update algorithms are an order of mag-
\nnitude faster than dropping and rebuilding
\nthe index. To the best of our knowledge,
\nno previous work has addressed updates for
\nstructure indexes based on graph bisimilar-
