However,<br \/>\ncursor interactions are not all the same; different types<br \/>\nof cursor behavior patterns exist, such as reading, hesitating,<br \/>\nscrolling and clicking, each of which has a different meaning.<br \/>\nWe conduct a search study with 36 subjects and 32 search<br \/>\ntasks to determine when gaze and cursor are aligned, and<br \/>\nthus when the cursor position is a good proxy for gaze position.<br \/>\nWe study the effect of time, behavior patterns, user, and<br \/>\nsearch task on the gaze-cursor alignment, findings which lead<br \/>\nus to question the maxim that \u201cgaze is well approximated by<br \/>\ncursor.\u201d These lessons inform an experiment in which we predict<br \/>\nthe gaze position with better accuracy than simply using<br \/>\nthe cursor position, improving the state-of-the-art technique<br \/>\nfor approximating visual attention with the cursor.
