We present a word substitution approach
\nto combine the output of different machine
\ntranslation systems. Using part of speech
\ninformation, candidate words are determined
\namong possible translation options,
\nwhich in turn are estimated through a precomputed
\nword alignment. Automatic
\nsubstitution is guided by several decision
\nfactors, including part of speech, local
\ncontext, and language model probabilities.
\nThe combination of these factors
\nis defined after careful manual analysis
\nof their respective impact. The approach
\nis tested for the language pair German-
\nEnglish, however the general technique itself
