The REAL Challenge took place for the\u00a0first time in 2014, with a long term goal\u00a0of creating streams of real data that the\u00a0research community can use, by fostering\u00a0the creation of systems that are capable of\u00a0attracting real users. A novel approach\u00a0is to have high school and undergraduate\u00a0students devise the types of applications\u00a0that would attract many real users\u00a0and that need spoken interaction. The\u00a0projects are presented to researchers from\u00a0the spoken dialog research community and\u00a0the researchers and students work together\u00a0to refine and develop the ideas. Eleven
\nprojects were presented at the first workshop.\u00a0Many of them have found mentors\u00a0to help in the next stages of the projects.\u00a0The students have also brought out issues\u00a0in the use of speech for real applications.\u00a0Those issues involve privacy and significant\u00a0personalization of the applications.\u00a0While long-term impact of the challenge\u00a0remains to be seen, the challenge has already\u00a0been a success at its immediate aims\u00a0of bringing new ideas and new researchers\u00a0into the community, and serves as a model\u00a0for related outreach efforts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
