The New England lab builds on Microsoft’s commitment to collaborate with the broader research community and pursues new, interdisciplinary areas of research that bring together core computer scientists and social scientists to understand, model, and enable computing and online experiences of the future.

As part of the company’s open research environment, MSR-NE supports the academic tradition of hosting colloquia, seminar series, and special events that contribute to the intellectual commons. Hundreds from the local academic community have joined to speak at or attend these events, and the lab had more than 350 academic visitors this past year, many of whom have engaged deeply with other Microsoft Research researchers and with our product groups.

The lab supports a core team of established researchers, as well as a large group of postdocs, interns and distinguished visiting faculty members.

Transforming the world through deep research

Please see below for information about our Lab themes. MSR New England is an exciting, interdisciplinary environment in which researchers have the freedom to explore their scholarly interests with access to an extraordinary diversity of big and small data sources, an open publication policy, and close links to academic institutions. Interns are hired for twelve weeks and receive a competitive salary and benefits package. Most internships take place over the summer, but other time periods are possible.

Intern experience

“My Summer internship at Microsoft was one of the best summers I’ve ever had! To mark the 10th anniversary of Microsoft Research New England, a one-day symposium was held, which comprised of themed panels focused on mathematics and theory, economics, big data and machine learning, fairness, and social platforms. During this event, we welcomed researchers, faculty, and students from the academic community to discuss the future and advancing the state of the art.

2018 Charles River Lectures on Probability Theory and Related Topics

Microsoft Research New England, Cambridge, MA | October 12, 2018

Jointly organized by Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Microsoft Research New England, the Charles River Lectures on Probability and Related Topics is a one-day event for the benefit of the greater Boston area mathematics community.

Machine Learning Day 2018

Microsoft Research New England, Cambridge, MA | May 07, 2018

The seventh annual New England Machine Learning Day was held on Monday, May 07, 2018, at Microsoft Research New England, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Matching problems with preferences occur in widespread applications such as the assignment of school-leavers to universities, junior doctors to hospitals, students to campus housing, children to schools, kidney transplant patients to donors and so on. The common thread is that individuals have preference lists over the possible outcomes and the task is to find a matching of the participants that is in some sense optimal with respect to these preferences. The remit of the workshop is to explore matching problems with preferences from the perspective of algorithms and complexity, discrete mathematics, combinatorial optimization, game theory, mechanism design and economics, and thus a key objective is to bring together the research communities of the related areas.

Machine Learning Day 2017

Microsoft Research New England, Cambridge, MA | May 12, 2017

The sixth annual New England Machine Learning Day was held on Friday, May 12, 2017, at Microsoft Research New England, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
