However, early-career realities often get in the way. As any tenure-track academic knows, the first few years of one&rsquo;s career can be a seemingly endless process of writing grant proposals. The recently announced 2013 fellowships continue this tradition of supporting the brightest young academics in the field of computer science to pursue their visions and make an impact&mdash;a tangible manifestation of our commitment to collaborating with the scholarly community to use computing to solve global problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: medium;\">The seven <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/collaboration\/awards\/msrff_all.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">2013 Faculty Fellows<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> were selected from four regions: (1) Latin America and the Caribbean; (2) Europe, the Middle East, and Africa; (3) the United States and Canada; and (4) Australia and New Zealand. All seven fellows are pursuing breakthrough, high-impact research that has the potential to help alleviate some of today&rsquo;s most challenging problems. For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: small;\"><strong>Michael Schapira<\/strong>, a senior lecturer at the <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/new.huji.ac.il\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hebrew University of Jerusalem<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, is conducting research to design practical Internet protocols that will improve web performance and security by providing &ldquo;provable guarantees&rdquo; for such attributes as routing and traffic management.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: small;\"><strong>Animashree Anandkumar<\/strong>, assistant professor at the <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/uci.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of California, Irvine<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, is applying large-scale machine learning and high-dimensional statistics to various problems in social networking and computational biology.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: small;\"><strong>Monica Tentori<\/strong>, assistant professor at Mexico&rsquo;s <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cicese.edu.mx\/en\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Scientific Research and Higher Education<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> (CICESE), is researching human-computer interactions and ubiquitous computing, particularly on the design, development, and evaluation of natural user interfaces and self-reflection capture tools&mdash;work that helps support the needs of urban residents, hospital workers, and the elderly.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: medium;\">Joining Michael, Animashree, and Monica are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: small;\"><strong>Ryan Williams<\/strong>, assistant professor at <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stanford.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stanford University<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, whose research focuses on constructing algorithms that solve computational problems more efficiently<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: small;\"><strong>Ruslan Salakhutdinov<\/strong>, assistant professor at the <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.utsc.utoronto.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of Toronto Scarborough<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, whose interests lie in artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, and large-scale optimization.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: small;\"><strong>Katrina Ligett<\/strong>, assistant professor at the <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.caltech.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">California Institute of Technology<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, who is developing theoretical tools to address problems in data privacy and to understand individual incentives in complex settings<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: small;\"><strong>Michael Milford<\/strong>, senior lecturer at the <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.qut.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">Queensland University of Technology<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, whose research seeks to understand how robots and biological systems map and navigate the world<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: medium;\">With these awards, the Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship program now has provided support to 59 academic investigators whose exceptional talent for research and innovation in computer science identifies them as emerging leaders in their fields.
