{"id":1753,"date":"2012-09-24T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-09-24T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.msdn.microsoft.com\/msr_er\/2012\/09\/24\/users-attract-new-users-to-worldwide-telescope\/"},"modified":"2016-07-20T07:32:34","modified_gmt":"2016-07-20T14:32:34","slug":"users-attract-new-users-to-worldwide-telescope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/blog\/users-attract-new-users-to-worldwide-telescope\/","title":{"rendered":"Users Attract New Users to WorldWide Telescope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: medium;\">I&rsquo;ve done numerous public presentations of <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.worldwidetelescope.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">WorldWide Telescope<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> (WWT) since 2008, but last month&rsquo;s demos at the <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.astronomy2012.org\/dct\/page\/65599\" target=\"_blank\">International Astronomical Union&rsquo;s 2012 General Assembly<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> (IAU2012) in Beijing were by far the most satisfying. Why? Because they were conducted primarily by student volunteers, eager to showcase the capabilities of WWT to potential users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: medium;\">The exhibition at IAU2012 lasted two weeks, from August 20 to 31. Most of that time, our booth was staffed by four future scientists: Qing Wang of China Central Normal University, Hope Chen and Chris Faesi of Harvard University, and Bing Bai of Chongqing University. That&#8217;s amazing!&rsquo; I am quite certain that we raised awareness of WWT and generated a great impression of Microsoft.&rdquo;<\/span><br \/>&nbsp;<br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: medium;\">Indeed, WWT is one of the best data and information visualization technologies from Microsoft Research, and, yes, it is free for academic use. Since its public release in early 2008, WWT has been adopted by a growing legion of astronomical researchers and science educators. The success of WWT at IAU2012, and the way we made it successful, marks a milestone of WWT outreach: the users are attracting more users. And that&rsquo;s how we can grow a user community exponentially.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: medium;\">Want to see what all the excitement is about?
