These include mission-focused pursuits aimed at solving urgent challenges, the pursuit of new understandings at the foundations of computer science, and blue-sky initiatives exploring new possibilities. Notable developments, honors, and influences are far too numerous to include in a short blog post, so we can touch on only a small subset of representative milestones.<\/p>\n<p>On the foundations front, a stunning <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"set of experiments\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/quest-for-quirky-quantum-particles-may-have-struck-gold-1.10124\" target=\"_blank\">set of experiments<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> provided evidence for an elusive particle named the Majorana fermion. A team at the Delft University of Technology, led by Leo Kouwenhoven, used an experimental setup proposed and funded by our <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Station Q\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/labs\/stationq\/\" target=\"_blank\">Station Q<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>. Majoranas have been proposed as central in enabling an approach to quantum computing being pursued at Station Q.<\/p>\n<p>Moving from quantum computing to the more familiar world of Turing and von Neumann, Flat Datacenter Storage won <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"the MinuteSort record\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/news\/features\/minutesort-052112.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">the MinuteSort record<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> hands-down. Stunning advances in real-world program synthesis for end users were revealed via a feature in <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Excel\" href=\"http:\/\/office.microsoft.com\/en-us\/excel\/\" target=\"_blank\">Excel<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> named <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"FlashFill\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/um\/people\/sumitg\/flashfill.html\" target=\"_blank\">FlashFill<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, heralded by <em>CNN Money<\/em> as &ldquo;Excel 2013&rsquo;s coolest new feature.&rdquo; Moving beyond the excitement of a feature in <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Office\" href=\"http:\/\/office.microsoft.com\/en-us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Office<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, the work reveals only a glimmer of a visionary path forward for achieving &ldquo;programming by demonstration.&rdquo; In the realm of enterprises and data centers, efforts led to the fielding of <a title=\"Windows Server 2012\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/server-cloud\/ws2012\/default.aspx?EP=200072478\" target=\"_blank\">Windows Server 2012<\/a> <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Primary Data Dedup\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/b\/filecab\/archive\/2012\/07\/03\/large-scale-study-and-system-design-for-primary-data-deduplication-accepted-by-usenix.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Primary Data Dedup<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> and <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Hekaton\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/b\/dataplatforminsider\/archive\/2012\/11\/08\/breakthrough-performance-with-in-memory-technologies.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Hekaton<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> for <a title=\"SQL Server\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/sqlserver\/en\/us\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">SQL Server<\/a>. A new approach to erasure coding called <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Local Reconstruction Codes\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/b\/windowsazure\/archive\/2012\/06\/13\/usenix-best-paper-award-erasure-coding-in-windows-azure-storage.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Local Reconstruction Codes<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> won a best-paper award and went into production for <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Windows Azure\" href=\"http:\/\/www.windowsazure.com\/en-us\/pricing\/free-trial\/?WT.mc_id=azurebg_us_sem_branded_trialpage\" target=\"_blank\">Windows Azure<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, significantly reducing storage costs. New platforms developed at our lab for performing machine learning and fielding predictive models matured into tools now used across Microsoft. And code-verification tools from our <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Research in Software Engineering\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/groups\/rise\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Research in Software Engineering<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> teams continued to see use throughout Microsoft, including application in verifying the ARM code in <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Windows RT\" href=\"http:\/\/windows.microsoft.com\/en-US\/windows\/rt-welcome\" target=\"_blank\">Windows RT<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tentacles of innovation from Microsoft Research Redmond reached into multiple user experiences, with some recent advances now in the hands of consumers. For example, designs for sensing orientation from Microsoft Research enabled the <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Forza Horizon Wireless Speed Wheel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.xbox.com\/en-ZA\/Xbox360\/Accessories\/Controllers\/Forza-Horizon-Wireless-Speed-Wheel-Bundle\" target=\"_blank\">Forza Horizon Wireless Speed Wheel<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> for <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Xbox\" href=\"http:\/\/www.xbox.com\/en-US\/\" target=\"_blank\">Xbox<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>. Predictive methods for assisting with text input called <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Word Flow\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.windows.com\/windows_phone\/b\/windowsphone\/archive\/2012\/12\/06\/the-secrets-of-the-windows-phone-8-keyboard.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Word Flow<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> have been incorporated into <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Windows Phone 8\" href=\"http:\/\/www.windowsphone.com\/en-US\/\" target=\"_blank\">Windows Phone 8<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>. Numerous other developments explored new directions in computing, from compelling to exotic, including efforts in the <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Humantenna\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/um\/redmond\/groups\/cue\/humAntenna\/\" target=\"_blank\">Humantenna<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> project, the debut of the <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Printing Dress\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rql6wUjRyDk\" target=\"_blank\">Printing Dress<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> during CES and SXSW, and the release of <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Cliplets\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/um\/redmond\/projects\/cliplets\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cliplets<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>. As an example, <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"MT Hub\" href=\"https:\/\/hub.microsofttranslator.com\/SignIn?returnURL=%2FHome%2FIndex\" target=\"_blank\">MT Hub<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, a collaborative effort from our <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Microsoft Research Connections\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/collaboration\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft Research Connections<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> team, provides a crowdsourced approach to translation, with the ability to capture and preserve rare languages such as Hmong Daw and Mayan tongues. Predictive models for <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"challenging patient outcomes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.caradigm.com\/pages\/products\/reduce-readmissions.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">challenging patient outcomes<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> developed by Microsoft Research were deployed in hospitals throughout the world via <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Caradigm\" href=\"http:\/\/www.caradigm.com\/Pages\/en-us\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Caradigm<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, a joint venture in health-care computing between Microsoft and GE Healthcare, created with guidance from Microsoft Research.<\/p>\n<p>Outreach, collaboration with colleagues, and sharing continued on multiple fronts. In one development, Microsoft Research&rsquo;s release of the source code for the <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Z3\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/um\/people\/leonardo\/blog\/2012\/10\/02\/open-z3.html\" target=\"_blank\">Z3<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> automated theorem prover was greeted with great enthusiasm by the computing community. Researchers across Microsoft Research labs continued intensive engagements in organizing conferences and workshops, as well as with dedicated service with panels and committees for NGOs and government agencies. As an example, <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Peter Lee\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/people\/petelee\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Lee<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> of Microsoft Research Redmond&nbsp; co-authored the <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"2012 President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology review of Federal investments in networking and IT research\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cccblog.org\/2012\/12\/02\/2012-pcast-review-of-nitrd-slides-and-webcast-from-public-briefing\/\" target=\"_blank\">2012 President&#8217;s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology review of Federal investments in networking and IT research<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, which included an effort on updating the <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"&ldquo;tire tracks&rdquo; visualization\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nap.edu\/catalog.php?record_id=13427#toc\" target=\"_blank\">&ldquo;tire tracks&rdquo; visualization<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> of the influence of computer-science research on industry and society. Multiple awards and citations celebrated the long-term contributions by Microsoft researchers and engineers, and the lab received numerous best-paper awards and two test-of-time awards for contributions that shine from a 10-year perspective.<\/p>\n<p>On another front, we worked to add new sparkle to our physical surroundings, lighting up the atrium in Building 99 with artistry and technology. Our gallery team created a persistent art space in our lobby featuring the creative talents of people at Microsoft Research. New hires included strong talent in the algorithms and systems areas. In a collaborative effort, the Redmond lab worked closely with its sister labs to found <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Microsoft Research New York City\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/labs\/newyork\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft Research New York City<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, attracting key new talent to Microsoft Research at a new hub of activity in a bustling city.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of 2012, we had a change in leadership at the Redmond lab. After two years of inspirational service as lab director, Peter Lee moved into a new role as head of Microsoft Research USA, overseeing the U.S. labs. Deputy managing directors <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Eric Horvitz\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/um\/people\/horvitz\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eric Horvitz<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> and <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Yi-Min Wang\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/um\/people\/ymwang\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yi-Min Wang<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> were asked to serve as managing co-directors of Microsoft Research Redmond.<\/p>\n<p>Looking forward to 2013, we see strong innovation continuing on a <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"portfolio of research\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/b\/inside_microsoft_research\/archive\/2011\/12\/31\/microsoft-research-redmond-year-in-review.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">portfolio of research<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> efforts aimed at achieving results along a spectrum of time horizons. We&rsquo;ve talked about <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Kinect\" href=\"http:\/\/www.xbox.com\/en-US\/kinect\" target=\"_blank\">Kinect<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> as an example of the flow of ideas from long-term, open research and mission-focused goals coming together to create magic. Another example is the cross-lab collaboration on a rich synthesis of efforts in machine learning, speech recognition, machine translation, and text-to-speech that enabled the awe-inspiring demonstration of <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"speech-to-speech translation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Nu-nlQqFCKg&feature=share\" target=\"_blank\">speech-to-speech translation<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> in Tianjin, China in October&mdash;with <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Rick Rashid\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/people\/rashid\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rick Rashid<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, Microsoft chief research officer, speaking in English and the audience hearing his words almost flawlessly translated in his own voice into Mandarin.
