(Photography by Scott Eklund\/Red Box Pictures)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Microsoft Research\u2019s annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/event\/faculty-summit-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty Summit<\/a> opened Wednesday with a series of talks about how technological innovation can benefit both business and society.<\/p>\n<p>In a fireside chat with Jeannette M. Wing, Microsoft&#8217;s corporate vice president in charge of the company&#8217;s basic research labs, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella underscored the key role Microsoft Research (MSR) plays in continuing to deliver breakthroughs capable of making big impacts across multiple industries.<\/p>\n<p>Nadella&#8217;s \u201cMicrosoft Vision\u201d fireside chat with Wing was an apt beginning to the 17<sup>th<\/sup> annual Faculty Summit, which is being attended by 600 leading academics and researchers.<\/p>\n<p>Over the two-day summit, researchers will discuss ways to collaborate on the most pressing and important research questions in computer science and beyond. At a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/video\/faculty-summit-2016-hot-topics\/\" target=\"_blank\">hot topics<\/a>\u201d session Wednesday, for example, Microsoft researchers presented the latest advances in speech recognition, cryptography, molecular programming and Internet security.<\/p>\n<p>Daron Green, the managing director for Microsoft Research&#8217;s Outreach program, opened the summit with a call for researchers to utilize the newest machine learning and artificial intelligence tools, all publicly and freely available to academia:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/cognitive-services\/en-us\/academic-knowledge-api\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft Cognitive Services Academic Knowledge API<\/a> accesses the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/project\/microsoft-academic-graph\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Academic Graph<\/em><\/a> (<a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/academicgraph.blob.core.windows.net\/graph\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">data<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>) which now consists of 150 million publications dating back to 1870 and is growing at a rate of 1 million publications per month. What\u2019s more, researchers can experience the breadth and depth of the Academic Knowledge API and Academic Graph by using <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft Academic<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, an online destination where anyone can discover a rich set of related papers, conferences, people and other information in their area of expertise.<\/li>\n<li><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/openacademic.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\">Open Academic Society<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>:\u00a0Newly formed with the ambition of growing the Academic Graph, members provide workshops, challenges, and data sharing activities and anyone can benefit by participating and\/or contributing to the mammoth dataset of 44 million unique authors and 1 billion citations.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/project\/project-malmo\/\" target=\"_blank\">Project Malmo<\/a>:\u00a0The open source initiative sends AI-fueled agents into the\u00a0world-building game Minecraft with the goal of developing more sophisticated intelligence that can complete human-like tasks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I hope that the summit inspires all of us to think about how we can shape the future of computer science and technology to make positive changes for society.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learn more<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/event\/faculty-summit-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\">2016 Microsoft Research Faculty Summit<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/video\/faculty-summit-2016-hot-topics\/\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty Summit 2016 Hot Topics<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By\u00a0Harold Javid,\u00a0General Chair, Faculty Summit Microsoft Research\u2019s annual Faculty Summit opened Wednesday with a series of talks about how technological innovation can benefit both business and society.
