Not only do more and more of the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">world&rsquo;s top jobs require science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) expertise, but few women enter engineering, causing a serious loss of a tremendous talent pool. We need to create more competent women engineers. <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\">Today is one step on that path. It&rsquo;s <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: italic\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\">Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day&mdash;a special shout-out to young women during National Engineers Week.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span><span style=\"text-transform: uppercase;\">A<\/span>s a female computing professional, I thought it would be helpful to focus on several &ldquo;girl&rdquo; engineers (rea<\/span><\/span><\/span><a name=\"_GoBack\" title=\"_GoBack\"><\/a><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\">l or plastic) who have made a tremendous impact in our lives.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Maybe a look at them can show us how to close the gap between the world&rsquo;s engineering needs and the women looking for great opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\">Take Barbie<b>.<\/b> Back in 1992, when I was a computer science professor at the University of Virginia and the mother of two young girls, I learned that Mattel had created a Barbie that said, &ldquo;math class is tough.&rdquo;&nbsp; I thought, &ldquo;it&rsquo;s only tough if the girls are led to believe that it&rsquo;s tough.&rdquo;&nbsp; It&rsquo;s the incorrect stereotypes themselves that make math hard!<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nearly 20 years later, Mattel may help turn that stereotype around with the release of<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/bits.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/02\/12\/barbies-next-career-computer-engineer\/?em%3e\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\">Computer Engineer Barbie<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\">&mdash;complete with a fashionable binary code shirt, pink glasses, and a pink laptop. (For all you Barbie experts out there: Don&rsquo;t worry&mdash;her feet are still designed to fit into her signature high heels!) <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\">Barbie the computer engineer follows in some pretty big shoes. Those belong to Ada Lovelace. Never heard of her? <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\">The daughter of the poet Lord Byron and Anne Isabella Milbanke, Lovelace is often credited with writing the first computer program in the world&mdash;in 1842-43!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Essentially, she worked with Charles Babbage and, while translating and keeping notes about Babbage&rsquo;s Analytical engine (the early model for a computer), she added comments that have been widely recognized as the first software.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>As such, she is frequently seen as the founder of scientific computing. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Between Lovelace and Barbie, there are plenty of other amazing women computer engineers&mdash;some famous, such as<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: blue;\"><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grace_hopper\"><span style=\"color: blue;\">Grace Hopper<\/span><span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">some not.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp; <\/span>They serve as my inspirations as I work on projects such as the Tablet PC and other classroom technologies, or with teams of students around the world for the Multitouch and Tablet Accessibility Award at the Microsoft <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: blue;\"><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/imaginecup.com\/\"><span style=\"color: blue;\">Imagine Cup<\/span><span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">competition.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 12pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman','serif'; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Providing role models is an important piece. But hands-on experience is equally important. Take Microsoft&rsquo;s<\/span> <\/span><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/about\/diversity\/programs\/digigirlz\/default.aspx\"><span style=\"color: blue;\">DigiGirlz<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;\"> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">program. It&rsquo;s specifically designed to give high school girls the opportunity to learn about careers in technology, connect with Microsoft employees, and participate in hands-on computer and technology workshops.
