devise, and such was precisely the case during the <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Student Innovation Contest\" href=\"http:\/\/www.acm.org\/uist\/uist2011\/call\/contest.html\">Student Innovation Contest<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, held in conjunction with the Association for Computing Machinery&rsquo;s <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"24th annual Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology\" href=\"http:\/\/www.acm.org\/uist\/uist2011\/\">24th annual Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> (UIST), held Oct. 16-19 in Santa Barbara, Calif.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty groups participated in the contest, for which <a title=\"Microsoft Hardware\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/hardware\/en-us\">Microsoft Hardware<\/a>, <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Microsoft Research\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/\">Microsoft Research<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, and Microsoft&rsquo;s <a title=\"Microsoft Applied Sciences Group\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/appliedsciences\/\">Applied Sciences Group<\/a> supplied each student with a <a title=\"Microsoft Touch Mouse\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/hardware\/en-us\/products\/touch-mouse\/microsite\/\">Microsoft Touch Mouse<\/a>, customized specially for the contest, and exclusive access to the publicly available <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Touch Mouse API\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/downloads\/8ca8f8d1-c0b8-43a3-a519-0276195a6eec\/\">Touch Mouse API<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, to gain visibility to the real-time sensor information from the touch sensor on the mouse.<\/p>\n<p>The participants received three instructions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Experiment and combine the Touch Mouse with other devices and sensors.<\/li>\n<li>Use creativity to write new applications for the device.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate novel thinking by using the mouse, familiar to all computer users, in unique ways.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The winners satisfied those qualifications and more:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most Creative<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, from the University of California, Berkeley.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, two teams were chosen by their UIST peers as winners in the People&rsquo;s Choice category. <a pattern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=83hrdlR8Vlo&feature=youtu.be\">Grip to Identify: Super-fast login using your grip pattern<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, was second.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I knew it was going to be a great contest,&rdquo; said <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Chris Harrison\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chrisharrison.net\/\">Chris Harrison<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, a judge from Carnegie Mellon and a former intern at <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" Ideas ranged from funky to functional.
