And when they come from the IEEE, the world&rsquo;s largest professional association for the advancement of technology, they retain the distinction of superiority the King&rsquo;s English surely intended.<\/p>\n<p>Consider, then, the thrill with which <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Dilek Hakkani-T&uuml;r\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/people\/dilekha\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Dilek Hakkani-T&uuml;r<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> and <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Yongguang Zhang\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/people\/ygz\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yongguang Zhang<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> of Microsoft Research must have experienced in late November upon learning that they had been named to the list of 2014 IEEE Fellows.<\/p>\n<p>That honor is one of the most prestigious in the IEEE, the product of an annual rigorous evaluation procedure that produces a select group of recipients. The Fellows are chosen for &ldquo;extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Both Zhang and Hakkani-T&uuml;r heard of their selection by email, but don&rsquo;t think that renders the honor any less eagerly received.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msdnshared.blob.core.windows.net\/media\/TNBlogsFS\/prod.evol.blogs.technet.com\/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles\/00\/00\/00\/90\/35\/Yongguang_Zhang.jpg\" original-url=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/cfs-file.ashx\/__key\/communityserver-blogs-components-weblogfiles\/00-00-00-90-35\/Yongguang_5F00_Zhang.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin:10px;border:0px currentColor;float:right;\" title=\"Yongguang Zhang\" alt=\"Yongguang Zhang\" src=\"https:\/\/msdnshared.blob.core.windows.net\/media\/TNBlogsFS\/prod.evol.blogs.technet.com\/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles\/00\/00\/00\/90\/35\/Yongguang_Zhang.jpg\" original-url=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/resized-image.ashx\/__size\/550x0\/__key\/communityserver-blogs-components-weblogfiles\/00-00-00-90-35\/Yongguang_5F00_Zhang.jpg\" width=\"300\" \/><span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I first learned the news from the announcement email sent by the IEEE president [Peter W. Staecker],&rdquo; Zhang said. &ldquo;I feel honored and humbled.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>He&rsquo;s not the only one.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was the most exciting moment in my research career,&rdquo; said Hakkani-T&uuml;r, a senior researcher who, while a member of the <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Conversational Systems Research Center\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/groups\/srg\/\" target=\"_blank\">Conversational Systems Research Center<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> at <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Microsoft Research Redmond\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/labs\/redmond\/\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft Research Redmond<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, works from <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Microsoft Research Silicon Valley\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/labs\/siliconvalley\/\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft Research Silicon Valley<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>. &ldquo;I was at the San Jos&eacute; airport, on my way to Redmond, when I saw an email from Douglas O&rsquo;Shaughnessy [the IEEE Speech and Language Technical Committee (SLTC) chair, who had nominated her]. Then I noticed the IEEE Fellows email, as well.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Hakkani-T&uuml;r&rsquo;s Fellowship citation was &ldquo;for contributions to spoken-language processing.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I am extremely delighted and honored to receive this recognition!&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;I consider myself very fortunate to have worked with great people throughout my scientific journey.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msdnshared.blob.core.windows.net\/media\/TNBlogsFS\/prod.evol.blogs.technet.com\/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles\/00\/00\/00\/90\/35\/Dilek_Hakkani-Tur.jpg\" original-url=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/cfs-file.ashx\/__key\/communityserver-blogs-components-weblogfiles\/00-00-00-90-35\/Dilek_5F00_Hakkani_2D00_Tur.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin:10px;border:0px currentColor;float:left;\" title=\"Dilek Hakkani-Tur\" alt=\"Dilek Hakkani-Tur\" src=\"https:\/\/msdnshared.blob.core.windows.net\/media\/TNBlogsFS\/prod.evol.blogs.technet.com\/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles\/00\/00\/00\/90\/35\/Dilek_Hakkani-Tur.jpg\" original-url=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/resized-image.ashx\/__size\/550x0\/__key\/communityserver-blogs-components-weblogfiles\/00-00-00-90-35\/Dilek_5F00_Hakkani_2D00_Tur.jpg\" width=\"300\" \/><span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Zhang, a principal researcher at <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Microsoft Research Asia\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/labs\/asia\/\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft Research Asia<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> and research manager of that lab&rsquo;s <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Wireless and Networking\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/groups\/wn\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wireless and Networking<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> group, similarly took a moment to recognize his colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This,&rdquo; he said, &ldquo;is a recognition for my contributions, as well as for the whole Wireless and Networking research group that has been pursuing a shared vision with me over the past several years.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The citation for Zhang&rsquo;s Fellowship was &ldquo;for contributions to software radio technology.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is, indeed, the highest recognition and honor I have received so far in my career,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;It is a tall milestone for anyone who makes technology research his or her lifetime pursuit.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Hakkani-T&uuml;r, who focuses on natural language and speech processing, spoken dialog systems, and active and unsupervised learning for language processing, holds her newfound status of IEEE Fellow in equally high esteem.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is one of the highest recognitions in my research area, speech and language processing,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;IEEE is a very credible institution in this field, IEEE SLTC is one of the biggest and most active committees inside IEEE and the Signal Processing Society, and each year, only a few people get awarded.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>For 2014, Dilek Hakkani-T&uuml;r and Yongguang Zhang represent Microsoft Research&rsquo;s contribution to the IEEE Fellowship.
