Oscar winners get the drama of a famous celebrity who tears open an envelope, bends into a microphone, and intones a name. Nobel laureates get an early-morning phone call with a Swedish accent. I checked with <a title=\"John Tang\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/people\/johntang\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Tang<\/a>, <a title=\"Ken Hinckley\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/people\/kenh\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Hinckley<\/a>, and <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Richard Harper\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.microsoft.com\/#\/detail\/2122843253\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Harper<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> of Microsoft Research to find out how they learned of their 2014 election to the CHI Academy.<\/p>\n<p>As it turns out, the notifications vary, from the prosaic to the personalized.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msdnshared.blob.core.windows.net\/media\/TNBlogsFS\/prod.evol.blogs.technet.com\/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles\/00\/00\/00\/90\/35\/Richard_Harper.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"margin: 10px; border: 0px currentColor; float: right;\" title=\"Richard Harper\" src=\"https:\/\/msdnshared.blob.core.windows.net\/media\/TNBlogsFS\/prod.evol.blogs.technet.com\/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles\/00\/00\/00\/90\/35\/Richard_Harper.jpg\" alt=\"Richard Harper\" width=\"230\" \/><span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>Take Harper, for example. A principal researcher at <a title=\"Microsoft Research Cambridge\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/lab\/microsoft-research-cambridge\/\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft Research Cambridge<\/a>, he learned of his election to the CHI Academy\u2014joining principal leaders of the HCI field whose efforts have shaped the discipline and led its innovation\u2014via email.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey send a private email before the announcement,\u201d he explains, adding, tongue in cheek, \u201cIt felt a bit awkward. It\u2019s nice, indeed\u2014but it also means you are old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tang, too, got the word via email.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was in my office when I received the email informing me that I was inducted into the CHI Academy,\u201d says Tang, a senior researcher based in Silicon Valley, although he works in the <a title=\"neXus\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/group\/nexus\/\" target=\"_blank\">neXus<\/a> group located at <a title=\"Microsoft Research Redmond\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/lab\/microsoft-research-redmond\/\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft Research Redmond<\/a>. \u201cI would say I was joyfully honored upon reading the message!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msdnshared.blob.core.windows.net\/media\/TNBlogsFS\/prod.evol.blogs.technet.com\/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles\/00\/00\/00\/90\/35\/Ken_Hinckley.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"margin: 10px; border: 0px currentColor; float: left;\" title=\"Ken Hinckley\" src=\"https:\/\/msdnshared.blob.core.windows.net\/media\/TNBlogsFS\/prod.evol.blogs.technet.com\/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles\/00\/00\/00\/90\/35\/Ken_Hinckley.jpg\" alt=\"Ken Hinckley\" width=\"230\" \/><span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>Hinckley, a principal researcher at the Redmond lab, enjoyed a more tailored experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaul Greenberg\u2014himself an Academy member and current chair of the SIGCHI Achievement Awards Committee\u2014copied me once the Academy vote was official,\u201d Hinckley says. \u201cIt took me by surprise, because it looked like routine correspondence from the journal editorial board we both sit on, but then, suddenly, my name was on the list.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was great fun to hear about it from Saul, whom I\u2019ve collaborated with on a few papers and is someone in the field whom I really look up to and respect\u2014as well as being a great guy who shares my fondness for ribbing <a title=\"Bill Buxton\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/people\/bibuxton\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Buxton<\/a> whenever we get the chance!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft Research\u2019s three 2014 honorees were among eight named to the CHI Academy as individuals who have made substantial contributions to the HCI field. The criteria for selection are fourfold:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cumulative contributions to the field.<\/li>\n<li>Impact on the field through development of new research directions and\/or innovations.<\/li>\n<li>Influence on the work of others.<\/li>\n<li>Remaining a reasonably active participant in the Association for Computing Machinery\u2019s SIGCHI community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cTo be honest,\u201d Hinckley says, \u201cI haven\u2019t gotten past the impostor-syndrome aspect of receiving such an award.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t seem real. What the heck is my name doing on a list with all these other all-time greats in the human-computer-interaction field: Stu Card, Douglas Engelbart, Bill Buxton\u2014and, of course, my Ph.D. adviser, Randy Pausch, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2008. I really wish this is something I could have shared with him, as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joining the CHI Academy is, as Harper observes, recognition for achievements over the course of a career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElection to the CHI Academy amounts to an act of encouragement by the academic community for demonstrating a history of research contributions,\u201d he says. \u201cGetting this award means that others recognize that your career has included repeated transformations to the discipline of human-computer interaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msdnshared.blob.core.windows.net\/media\/TNBlogsFS\/prod.evol.blogs.technet.com\/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles\/00\/00\/00\/90\/35\/John_Tang.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 10px; border: 0px currentColor; float: right;\" title=\"John Tang\" src=\"https:\/\/msdnshared.blob.core.windows.net\/media\/TNBlogsFS\/prod.evol.blogs.technet.com\/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles\/00\/00\/00\/90\/35\/John_Tang.jpg\" alt=\"John Tang\" width=\"230\" \/><span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>The careers of those thus recognized have proved inspiring to many\u2014as will those of Harper, Hinckley, and Tang.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve admired all the people in the CHI Academy and the level of accomplishment that it stands for,\u201d Tang says. \u201cAs I looked over the list, it struck me how diverse the members are in terms of research interests and backgrounds across academia and industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReflecting on the breadth and diversity of the HCI research community as represented in the CHI Academy, I\u2019m honored to be included this year and look forward to continuing to work for the future growth of our field.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Posted by Rob Knies \u00a0Each year, SIGCHI, the international society for professionals, academics, and students interested in human technology and human-computer interaction (HCI), announces a short list of individuals who have been elected to the CHI Academy.
