As you might imagine, navigating reams and reams of climate data by yourself would be nothing short of monumental. FetchClimate! uses Azure to store enormous amounts of data and a Silverlight application to create a<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/um\/cambridge\/projects\/fetchclimate\/app\/\"><span style=\"color: #119dff;\">web-based user interface<\/span><span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>that anyone could use. And it works in conjunction with<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bingmaps.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #119dff;\">Bing Maps<\/span><span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, so you get a visually compelling experience that offers up a huge amount of information on virtually any point, or region in the world. This is Big Data in action.&nbsp;<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; line-height: 18pt; margin-top: 9pt;\"><span style=\"color: #525051; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 9pt;\"><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/people\/dpurves\/\"><span style=\"color: #119dff;\">Drew Purves<\/span><span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, head of the Computational Ecology and Environmental Science Group (CEES) at Microsoft Research Cambridge has been described as a<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/magazine\/archive\/2012\/02\/features\/the-smart-list?page=all\"><span style=\"color: #119dff;\">&#8220;<\/span><span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/magazine\/archive\/2012\/02\/features\/the-smart-list?page=all\"><span style=\"color: #119dff;\">once-in-a-generation young scientist&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>. Yesterday, he&nbsp;gave a demonstration of FetchClimate!, similar to the demo in the video above, and it&nbsp;really captured my imagination. There&rsquo;s a<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif';\">wealth<\/span><\/em><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>of information hidden within all of this data and to me at least, the potential use cases are huge &#8211; whether you&rsquo;re comparing crop yields against precipitation levels, looking for the best place to locate a wind farm based on average wind speed, or looking for the sunniest place to spend your next&nbsp;Mediterranean&nbsp;holiday , there&rsquo;s something there for you. And once you&rsquo;ve run a report you can either export it into Excel for later use, or share the URL with others.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; line-height: 18pt; margin-top: 9pt;\"><span style=\"color: #525051; font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'; font-size: 9pt;\">When we start talking about trends like Big Data, it can be easy to get lulled into this sense that we&rsquo;re still a couple years out, but FetchClimate clearly dispels that notion. FetchClimate! is incredibly powerful &#8211; it&rsquo;s<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/um\/cambridge\/projects\/fetchclimate\/app\/\"><span style=\"color: #119dff;\">here now<\/span><span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>and everyone can benefit.
