<\/span>There are a lot of really cool projects at <\/span>TechFest<\/span> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> <\/span>this year – if you pushed me to pick a personal favorite, I’d choose <\/span>FetchClimate<\/span><\/strong>!<\/span> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>. With amazing demonstrations such as <\/span>Holoflector<\/span> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Illumishare<\/span> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, this is one that you may not
expect…allow me to explain why I’m so excited about FetchClimate!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Organizations like the UN, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and The Met Office have been recording data on changes in the weather dating all the way back to the turn of the 20th Century. As you might imagine, navigating reams and reams of climate data by yourself would be nothing short of monumental. FetchClimate! uses Azure to store enormous amounts of data and a Silverlight application to create a <\/span>web-based user interface<\/span> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> <\/span>that anyone could use. And it works in conjunction with <\/span>Bing Maps<\/span> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, so you get a visually compelling experience that offers up a huge amount of information on virtually any point, or region in the world. This is Big Data in action. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Drew Purves<\/span> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, head of the Computational Ecology and Environmental Science Group (CEES) at Microsoft Research Cambridge has been described as a <\/span>“<\/span> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>once-in-a-generation young scientist”<\/span> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>. Yesterday, he gave a demonstration of FetchClimate!, similar to the demo in the video above, and it really captured my imagination. There’s a <\/span>wealth<\/span><\/em> <\/span>of information hidden within all of this data and to me at least, the potential use cases are huge – whether you’re comparing crop yields against precipitation levels, looking for the best place to locate a wind farm based on average wind speed, or looking for the sunniest place to spend your next Mediterranean holiday , there’s something there for you. And once you’ve run a report you can either export it into Excel for later use, or share the URL with others.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

When we start talking about trends like Big Data, it can be easy to get lulled into this sense that we’re still a couple years out, but FetchClimate clearly dispels that notion. FetchClimate! is incredibly powerful – it’s <\/span>here now<\/span> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> <\/span>and everyone can benefit.
