With nearly two decades of delivering joint innovation<\/span>\u00a0to meet changing business demands<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Microsoft and SUSE continue to focus on enabling digital transformation for our customers, building on open source solutions, and a seamless collaborative support model for SUSE workloads on SQL Server and Azure.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To broaden deployment options for our customers, you can run SQL Server on-premises with S<\/span><\/span>USE\u00a0<\/span><\/span>L<\/span><\/span>inux\u00a0<\/span><\/span>E<\/span><\/span>nterprise\u00a0<\/span><\/span>S<\/span><\/span>erver SLES<\/span><\/span>\u00a012, in the cloud with\u00a0<\/span><\/span>SLES-based\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Azure Virtual Machines<\/span><\/span><\/span>, and in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>SQL Server SLES containers running on the SUSE Container\u00a0as\u00a0a\u00a0Service (CaaS) Platform<\/span><\/span>, and expect a consistent experience\u00a0<\/span><\/span>from on-premises to cloud<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> Customers will not need a separate repository or package requirements in case of SLES 12 SP5 and the guidelines documentation for quickstart installation<\/a> remains current. Support levels are also updated in the release notes.<\/a> Additionally, last week at SUSECON Digital we made announcements related to Azure Arc<\/a> hybrid capabilities. Azure Arc enables deployment of Azure services anywhere and extends Azure management to any infrastructure across on-premises, edge, and mult<\/span>i-<\/span>cloud<\/span>\u00a0environments<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

SQL Server 2019 on SLES 12 on-premises<\/h2>\n

Announcing SQL Server 2019 on SLES 12 SP5 is now fully supported for production use. <\/span>With SQL Server 2019, you can\u00a0<\/span>take advant<\/span>age<\/span>\u00a0of<\/span> features such as intelligent query processing, data virtualization, a<\/span>ccelerated database recovery, <\/span>improved developer experiences, and\u202f<\/span>much more<\/span><\/a>\u202fdeployed on the SUSE SLES 12 environment of your choice.\u00a0<\/span>See how SQL Server 2019 c<\/span>ustomers like\u00a0<\/span>Ita\u00fa\u00a0<\/span>Unibanco,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0a banking leader in Latin America, <\/span>use<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the i<\/span>ntelligent q<\/span>uery p<\/span>rocessing<\/span>\u00a0capabilities in SQL Server 2019\u00a0<\/span>w<\/span>ith virtually no code changes<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to achieve incredible performance for several business-critical processes<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One major performance improvement in\u00a0<\/span>SUSE\u00a0<\/span>SLES 12 SP5 is the\u00a0<\/span>support for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Forced Unit Access (FUA<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>f<\/span>or user-mode IO calls for XFS file system<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Users of SQL Server on Linux may have been introduced to certain storage and IO flush related configurations due to the unavailability of FUA in user mode.\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>ith the introduction of FUA capability support in user mode for XFS filesystem by the <\/span>SUSE engineering team<\/span>, users can realize high-performance gains for IO-bound workloads on SQL Server<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

SQL Server\u00a02019\u00a0on SLES 12 Azure Virtual Machines<\/h2>\n

For customers interested in running\u00a0<\/span>SQL Server as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS),\u00a0<\/span>the Azure Marketplace offers pre-configured\u202f<\/span>SQL Server 2019 on SUSE SLES 12 Azure Virtual Machines<\/span><\/a>.<\/span> The <\/span>SUSE Linux Enterprise Server with High Availability Extension provides mission-critical uptime, fast failover, improved manageability, and easy configuration for Always-on Availability Groups (AG) for SQL Server High Availability setup on Azure.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>While<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>users will be able<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>set up a pacemaker cluster on SUSE SLES VM on Azure<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>h<\/span>i<\/span>gh availability\u00a0<\/span>in the\u00a0<\/span>SUSE<\/span>\u00a0repository<\/span>\u00a0will be<\/span>\u00a0enabled<\/span>\u00a0in a future\u00a0<\/span>SQL Server\u00a0<\/span>community\u00a0<\/span>update<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
