Both of his parents were Holocaust survivors; his mother spent time in Auschwitz and his father was part of the underground resistance.
Family emigrated to Canada in 1950.
Was nearly jailed for producing a soft-core porn film, The Columbus of Sex, in 1969.
Helped fund the Bell Lightbox (headquarters to the Toronto International Film Festival) in Toronto, which stands on the plot of land that was once occupied by his father's car wash. A nearby intersection is named Reitman Square, in honor of his parents.
