Frequently asked questions

  • The Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 is designed to enable the use of mixed reality in dirty, loud, and safety-controlled industrial work environments such as construction sites, manufacturing facilities, and oil refineries. It is designed and tested for hard hat and eyewear impact compliance and intrinsic safety certifications and merges seamlessly with existing PPE requirements on your site. The Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 is a fully integrated HoloLens 2 device, ready for work right out of the box.

Every Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 comes fully assembled, including the integrated HoloLens 2 and hard hat. Each device comes with a mobiWAN bone conduction Bluetooth® headset, a ruggedized backpack carrying case, charging adapters and cables, and a quick start user guide.

  • The Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 is manufactured and sold by Trimble. It is the only official 3rd-party HoloLens 2 based solution, developed as part of Microsoft’s HoloLens 2 Customization Program. Trimble sources OEM HoloLens 2 components from Microsoft to manufacture the device.
  • The Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 is integrated into an industry-standard MSA V-Gard hard hat and certified to the hard hat compliance standards in every market where it is sold. In the USA and Canada, the device is certified to ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 Type 1, Class E (OSHA compliant) and CSA Z94.1, respectively.

The Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 is also certified for Eyewear Basic Impact as per ANSI Z87.1-2015 and CSA Z94.3-07, as well as their international equivalents.

For a full list of international certifications, please refer to the datasheet here.

  • The Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 is certified for use in UL Class I, Division 2-Groups A, B, C, and D HAZLOC environments where flammable gases, vapors, or liquids may exist.

For more information, read about UL certifications.

  • The Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 is designed, tested, and certified to work with any MSA V-Gard Cap Style or Full Brim hard hat. The device comes pre-assembled with the hard hat included, but users are welcome to swap in their own MSA V-Gard hard hat, if desired. Other brands of hard hat are unlikely to work with the Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 fit system. The Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 can be easily detached from the hard hat and moved to another.
  • Attempting to wear a HoloLens 2 while also wearing a hard hat is burdensome and uncomfortable, as the suspension fit systems for each clash at the rear of the user’s head. The Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 integrates the HoloLens device on top of the hard hat, removing clashing, increasing balance and comfort, enabling users to flip up their HoloLens visor when not in use, and leaving room for other PPE accessories.

More importantly, wearing a hard hat on top of a standard HoloLens 2 may alter the way in which the hard hat protects your head and could be in violation of OSHA (and equivalent) requirements.

Last, the Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 isn’t just a hard hat and a HoloLens. The device - with its elegant fit system, flip-up visor, compatibility with other PPE accessories, mobiWAN bone conduction headset, and ruggedized carrying case - is purpose-built for use in industrial settings.

  • The Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 is designed to merge into your existing PPE requirements, not displace them. The device has standard hard hat accessory mounts enabling the attachment of earmuffs, face shields, and chin straps compatible with the MSA V-Gard hard hat. Face shields should be attached and configured in a way as to not block the sensors on the front of the HoloLens device.

Users can still wear eyeglasses, sunglasses, and safety glasses with the Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2. This is recommended in environments with eyewear PPE requirements, as the Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 does not provide full peripheral coverage. The Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 visor can be flipped up and out of the user’s view when not needed.

The Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 detects hand gestures to enable users to interact with their holographic applications and content. Users can still wear gloves, where required. Slim fitting, light colored gloves are recommended.

  • The mobiWAN accessory comes with every Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2, providing high quality audio output in even the loudest environments. The device attaches to the rear suspension of the hard hat and provides Bluetooth® audio via bone conduction, just behind your ears. With bone conduction, users can receive audio output from the Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 even if they are wearing noise-cancelling earmuffs or earplugs. In conjunction with the 5-microphone array on the front of the Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2, the mobiWAN enables spoken word audio operations, such as remote assist calls, in ambient noise environments up to 115dB.
  • The Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 features a 1-year limited manufacturer’s warranty from Trimble.

  • The Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 is not currently covered by Microsoft’s Rapid Replacement Program.

If you believe you have a defective unit, please contact Trimble support. If the unit is not able to be recovered we will issue a replacement as soon as possible, even if the defective unit has not yet been returned.

  • Trimble can replace and repair certain parts of the Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 kit such as the grey XR10 housing, front hinge, hard hat, suspension system, mobiWAN, carrying case, and charging accessories. If you need support for any of these items, please contact Trimble.

Repair, replacement, and refurbishment is not supported for the HoloLens 2 components of the Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 system. If there is an issue with these components, the Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 system must be replaced.

  • The hard surfaces of the Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2, including the visor, suspension, and hard hat, can be cleaned with a solution of 70% isopropyl alcohol and water.  Do not saturate or submerge any electronic part of the device.
  • Much of the advice for cleaning the standard HoloLens 2 applies to the Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2. Review the HoloLens 2 cleaning FAQ.
