Notorious shyster lawyer Sung Shih-chieh (Stephen Chow) wins many court cases with his silver-tongued, unethical approach to defense law. His wife Li (Anita Mui Yim-fong), who has had one miscarriage after another, traces the root of the couple’s inability to have a child to his evil doings in defending criminals, and persuades him to turn over a new leaf. A wealthy man's son kills another man in a fight. To get his son off the hook, the rich father persuades Sung to defend him with a lucrative remuneration. Sung eventually takes up the case and wins it with his usual rhetoric. He returns home in triumph only to learn of a family mishap. Heartbroken, Sung finally accedes to his grief-stricken wife's entreaties to turn to a new business and try to perform more charity. Soon she gets pregnant again and Sung submissively protects her and takes care of her every need. A frail young mother, Yang Hsiu Chen (Carrie Ng), is framed for the murder of her husband. Li comes to her rescues and brings her and her newborn baby home with her. Unable to convince her husband to defend the woman, Li goes directly to the magistracy to plead Yang’s innocence. Knowing of her husband's notoriety, the new magistrate Hu (Ng Man-tat) scares Li off. Learning that his wife has been humiliated, Sung appears in court to complain to the judge, forcing him to apologize and to investigate the case. The real murderer of Yang's husband turns out to be the sister of Chief Secretary Shansi (Liang Chia-jen). He bribes a court official to set up Sung for contempt of court. Sung is deprived of his title, paraded in public and imprisoned. A killer is then sent to murder Sung in jail and to behead his whole family. What will the famous lawyer do to avert the family disaster?
