Back from the Crusades where they fought under King Richard the Lionheart (Richard Harris), Robin Hood (Sean Connery) and Little John (Nicol Williamson) refuse the insane despot's last bizarre command just before he is accidentally slain. Returning to Sherwood Forest, the pair is warmly welcomed by the members of the old band who once helped them rob the rich to help the poor. And now, as they are suffering under the mad King John, the people need Robin Hood more than ever. Before embarking to fight for their cause, Robin calls on his former love, Maid Marian (Audrey Hepburn), who is now a nun. When the King commands Robin's old rival, the Sheriff of Nottingham (Robert Shaw), to remove the clergy from the countryside, Robin rescues Marian from her abbey and rekindles their romance. As he and the Sheriff prepare their final showdown, the erstwhile Robin, whose youth is over and whose body is aging, has a chance to win the glorious victory he dreamed of many years ago.
