Today,<\/span> we are introducing a new language to the ever-growing list of Translator languages \u2013 <\/i>welcome Lower Sorbian!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adding Lower Sorbian to Translator was made possible by the Sorbian language community, in particular the\u202f<\/span>Foundation for the Sorbian People<\/span><\/b><\/a>, the\u202fSorbian Institute<\/b><\/a>\u202fand the\u202f<\/span>Witaj Language Centre<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u202f <\/span>which donated data to create the new language system, following up on <\/span>our collaboration to build language support for Upper Sorbian<\/span><\/b><\/a> last year.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Beate Br\u011bzan, Head of the WITAJ Language Centre, states that <\/span>\u201cthe addition of Lower Sorbian to Microsoft Translator is a valuable contribution to the preservation of our cultural identity. The ability to translate between Sorbian and more than 100 languages enables our speech community to write in our own language and be understood by others, and vice-versa.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bernd Melcher, Head of the WITAJ Department in Lower Lusatia, highlights the positive impact of the language\u2019s integration into Translator: <\/span>\u201cNow we can create much-needed textbooks, study materials, and other publications at a larger scale. And our students can use their mobile devices for quick look-up of words and even save the translations \u2013 very motivating!\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Text translation for Lower Sorbian is available now in the\u202f<\/span>Microsoft Translator apps<\/span><\/b><\/a>, Office, and\u202f<\/span>Translator for Bing<\/span><\/b><\/a>.\u202fUsing\u202f<\/span>Translator, a Microsoft Azure Cognitive Service<\/span><\/b><\/a>,<\/span><\/b>\u202fyou can add Lower Sorbian text translation to your apps, websites, workflows, and tools; or use Translator\u2019s Document Translation feature to translate entire documents, or volumes of documents, in a variety of different file formats preserving their original formatting. You can also use Translator with\u202f<\/span>Cognitive Services<\/span><\/b><\/a>,\u202fsuch as\u202f<\/span>Speech<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u202for\u202f<\/span>Vision<\/span><\/b><\/a>, to add additional capabilities such as speech and image translation into your apps.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

About the Lower Sorbian language<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Lower Sorbian (dolnoserb\u0161\u0107ina) is a West Slavic minority language spoken in eastern Germany in the historical province of Lower Lusatia, today part of Brandenburg. Signs in this region are typically bilingual, and the city of Cottbus (Ch\u00f3\u015bebuz) has a Lower Sorbian High School where one language of instruction is Lower Sorbian. It is a heavily endangered language with less than 7,000 speakers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
