Azure Partner Community: SAP HANA on Microsoft Azure

Willie Maul, Technology Solutions Professional, Microsoft Azure

On the February Azure Partner call, we discussed SAP HANA on Azure, and talked about the partnership between Microsoft and SAP, highlighting case studies of SAP workloads running on Azure. We also discussed some of the scenarios that make sense such as dev/test, production environments, disaster recovery, and archiving, as well as benefits around reductions in total cost of ownership, faster provisioning, and lower storage costs. We’ll continue that discussion on the March 9 partner call, with a deeper discussion about SAP HANA on Azure.

SAP HANA (high-performance analytic appliance) is “an application that uses in-memory database technology that allows the processing of massive amounts of real-time data in a short time” (more on Techopedia). SAP HANA can be deployed on Azure virtual machines and is supported on VM offerings that are available in the Azure portal. In September, SAP HANA on Microsoft Azure was released, and lets customers run the largest SAP HANA workloads (OLTP and OLAP) of any hyperscale cloud provider. In the table below, taken from the documentation about Using SAP on Azure Virtual Machines, you can see the supported OS and Azure offerings for different SAP HANA products.

SAP HANA Certifications

SAP HANA for Azure (Large Instances)

SAP HANA for Azure (Large Instances) provides specific hardware configurations for SAP HANA workloads that require memory sizes larger than 0.5 TB. These instances can power the largest SAP HANA workloads of any hyperscale public cloud provider.

SAP HANA Performance

A five-part architecture and technical deployment guide is available and covers architecture, infrastructure and connectivity, installations, high availability and disaster recovery, and troubleshooting and monitoring.

Here are a couple of important considerations for architecting a solution on SAP HANA on Azure (Large Instances). ExpressRoute is highly recommended as the VPN connectivity option. Sizing SAP HANA on Azure (Large Instances) is the same as sizing for SAP in general. There are a few reports available for migrating from other solutions, as well as a SAP Quick Sizer for green field implementations. These are pointed out in the “Sizing” section of the overview document, and they assist with determining the necessary configuration for SAP HANA on Azure (Large Instances). The skills needed for a SAP HANA on Azure (Large Instances) include experience with Azure IaaS. Additional skillsets around SAP HANA installation and designing a high availability and disaster recovery SAP HANA solution are necessary.

Partner opportunity

Customers want to take advantage of cloud benefits such as quicker deployment, scalability, lower total cost of ownership, and the OPEX model for enterprise resource planning (ERP)implementations. The availability of SAP HANA on Azure (Large Instances) is an opportunity for partners with Azure expertise to offer solutions to these companies.

Community call about SAP HANA on Azure on Thursday, March 9

Join my colleagues and me on the March 9 Azure Partner call for a discussion about SAP HANA on Azure. This is part two in our series, building on our February call.
