Trailblazing: a new digital & integrated approach to the student record system at TEDI-London

TEDI-London is a new higher education provider for future engineers, founded by Arizona State University, King's College London and UNSW Sydney. It will accept its first student cohort in September 2021, welcoming them to a newly built campus in London’s Canada Water.

In October 2019, TEDI-London’s CIO, David Minahan, was in the unusual position of being able to define and implement a best practice digital strategy and a new student record system without being having to deal with any legacy constraints.

“We’ve got an end-to-end student record system that is built on the Microsoft Higher Education Accelerator and encompasses all of our marketing, recruitment and applications processes.”

The freedom to decide what the new best practice looks like

Having comprehensively reviewed the market, David and the rest of the TEDI-London team decided that Microsoft Dynamics 365 would provide the best platform on which to build a new, digital and integrated system for student records. It would enable the team to manage the entire lifecycle of a contact – from application to alumni.

The TEDI-London team worked with ANS Group to build a modern, end-to-end student record system from the ground up, using the power of Microsoft Dynamics 365 and the Microsoft Higher Education Accelerator. They created and deployed the solution they needed in just nine months.

“From my perspective, we’ve got a reduced long-term overhead in terms of the cost of IT.”

David explains, “When you buy into Microsoft, you’re buying into a development resource that can’t be replicated anywhere else… The Microsoft development teams working on these products far outstrips anything you could do yourself. And I think the functionality and useability is only going to get better.”

Ease of management, wealth of features

The new student record system includes a wealth of functionality, including the curriculum, with all the programmes and modules, attendance and attendance monitoring, the student timetable, assessments and outcomes, and appeals.

“We’ve got an end-to-end student record system that is built on the Microsoft Higher Education Accelerator and encompasses all of our marketing, recruitment and applications processes,” says David Minahan. “We manage those student applications through a workflow process with lots of automation and have also built the integrations we need.”

An amazing outcome – with continual improvement possible

The TEDI-London team has also leveraged the no-code and low-code tools of the Microsoft Power Platform to add additional usability and extra tools for users – both for staff and students. Using Microsoft Power Apps, the team has already developed a mobile timetable app for students to access and more will follow. Access to the apps will be via users’ Microsoft 365 account.

“For TEDI-London it has been an amazing outcome really,” states David Minahan. “My colleagues have got a system that works in the way that they want it to work for the processes they have. And, from my perspective, we’ve got a reduced long-term overhead in terms of the cost of IT.”

“It’s really exciting to be working at TEDI-London and be using this system and this technology. It’s really amazing to see how much it can support what we’re trying to do here.”
