For Lander & Rogers, seamless integration and 78% faster deployments with Surface complement hybrid work

Lander & Rogers, an influential Australian law firm with a practice spanning a broad spectrum of sectors and industries, needed to upgrade its fleet of devices to meet the demands of both remote and in-office work. The Surface Laptop empowered the firm to follow modern deployment and management strategies—and with Microsoft Intune and Autopilot, it reduced deployment time from 3 hours to 40 minutes.

Lander and Rogers

Australian law firm Lander & Rogers needed to upgrade its fleet of devices to meet the demands of both remote and in-office work. The Surface Laptop empowered the firm to follow modern deployment and management strategies—and with Microsoft Intune and Autopilot, it reduced deployment time from 3 hours to 40 minutes.

Form, function, and user experience on devices

Lander & Rogers sought a laptop that enabled the use of modern deployment and management strategies with a contemporary aesthetic aligned with its forward-thinking, progressive visual brand identity. Quality performance, versatility and manageability were also top of the agenda for the firm's IT team.

For the new devices to successfully meet company requirements, they needed to integrate with the firm's existing technology stack enabling them to operate on a single-platform ecosystem, using agile deployment and device management.

Surface integration capabilities and hybrid work

The company embraced a Surface Laptop 5 solution that offered both advanced endpoint management solutions from Microsoft, and capabilities to integrate with existing systems. Surface enabled uniform management and integration capabilities, as Jared Woodruff, Head of AI Engineering and Infrastructure Teams at Lander & Rogers, explains: "The Surface Laptop 5 was the first time that we could actually tick all those boxes—with the integration of Windows Autopilot and Microsoft Intune with our existing Azure solution. The Surface Management Portal allows us to seamlessly support RMA processes and servicing functionality. These combined benefits provide one place to manage our fleet, control it, and have a holistic overview of operations."

The firm found that the Microsoft solution offered seamless integration with its existing Windows and Azure technology stack, faster deployment, and it supports the company's hybrid work model. Woodruff says, "Windows-based machines are across our SOE (standard operating environment). We've always had an interest in Surface, but it wasn't until the Surface Laptop 5 that all of our benchmarks were met in terms of performance, lighter build, aesthetics, and extended battery life. The Surface devices offered a significant enhancement in terms of the microphone array and the camera solution, which improved our teams' performance.” Woodruff is pleased that Surface supports its long-standing hybrid work model. "That was pretty key for us, because we have a hybrid dynamic for Lander & Rogers. Some people work from home. Some people work in the office. A device that seamlessly allows us to support both capabilities was key for us."

The company has seen faster delivery timelines and better time-to-delivery metrics compared to the old solution, thanks to a cloud-managed deployment process. "We're impressed with the performance of the Surface Laptop 5. Upon completing procurement, it will be a full modern deployment, utilizing Autopilot and Intune end-to-end, which are already operationalized."

Increased speed of deployments, advanced endpoint management, and native integrations

Using modern Microsoft tools like Intune and Autopilot for device provisioning and cloud endpoint management, the company has reduced deployment timelines, device servicing times, and RMA (return merchandise authorization) tickets. The current rollout with an Intune-deployed solution is 40 minutes, as opposed to 3 hours in a traditional deployment—a decrease of 78 percent. With Surface, the firm reduced device delivery times and had lower device failure rates, keeping them in service for longer. The company's IT department has minimized downtime and provisioning time—effectively giving lawyers time back.

The Surface has helped propel the firm’s broader, large-scale digital transformation initiative, using devices with a modern aesthetic in line with its forward-thinking, progressive visual brand identity. Quality hardware, tools, and software are central to Lander & Rogers' strategy—providing the best working environment for employees and ensuring exceptional service to clients. With Surface, the transition from workplace to home office environment is seamless.

The Surface deployment has accelerated the move to cloud technologies and helped the firm increase its security posture. The company now benefits from enhanced security standards Surface devices offer within the Microsoft Windows ecosystem: Windows Defender, device encryption, and device fingerprinting. Woodruff says, "We're at feature parity with previous capabilities and deployment protocols. Using Intune enhanced our security posture. We've changed internal practices to align with stricter security protocols and the entire firm's move to the Intune stack and Surfaces opens up the door to Microsoft E5 security solutions."

As an innovator in the legal industry, the firm's strategy includes planning for the future of generative AI, and Copilot. The firm's 140 "AI Champions" have been trying different use cases for Copilot deployment across various legal domains. Working directly with Microsoft, the firm gave feedback on areas to deploy Copilot. Woodruff says, "We fundamentally see Copilot as the baseline AI ecosystem and platform that companies will adopt in time. Other companies, tools and systems will be built on it—and integrate with it." He adds, "That's our focus—collecting use cases, experimenting with local AI solutions we engineer ourselves—building training plans, and adopting Microsoft training materials provided to us. We're collecting feedback, quantifying it—identifying where to focus on buying additional products, building our own, or working with Microsoft to find the right solution."

“The Surface Management Portal allows us to seamlessly support RMA processes and servicing functionality. These combined benefits provide one place to manage our fleet, control it, and have a holistic overview of operations.”
