What is the future of storytelling?
The most compelling creative work stems from unlikely pairings. Meet a new community that is forging the future of storytelling.
This is possibly one of the most interesting moments in history where technology is almost ahead of storytellers. With each introduction of technology, from the printing press to mixed reality, storytellers have had to identify new techniques and approaches. This can be overwhelming in isolation. So, how does one find a community?
Enter Future of StoryTelling (FoST). FoST is an annual two-day summit that brings together the best and brightest storytellers from all over the world, from Vince Kadlubek, the creator of Santa Fe’s mystery-laced immersive storytelling experience Meow Wolf, to Wendy Calhoun, the woman behind some of primetime’s most diverse and compelling dramas such as Empire and Nashville. Each of these storytellers is forging the future of storytelling—together—by sharing their innovations in what it means to create in the 21st century.
The origin of FoST
Like most everyone in the world of print, the Great Recession of the mid-2010s left Charlie Melcher with a difficult decision: whether to push forward with his book packaging company, Melcher Media. As the old adage goes, “necessity is the mother of invention;” and instead of closing up shop, Charles decided to push in an entirely new direction: digital. This decision led to the creation of Future of StoryTelling, a business built around a central community of people from the worlds of media, technology, and communications who are exploring how storytelling is evolving in the modern age—together.
