What is the future of storytelling?

The most compelling creative work stems from unlikely pairings. Meet a new community that is forging the future of storytelling.

This is possibly one of the most interesting moments in history where technology is almost ahead of storytellers. With each introduction of technology, from the printing press to mixed reality, storytellers have had to identify new techniques and approaches. This can be overwhelming in isolation. So, how does one find a community?

Enter Future of StoryTelling (FoST). FoST is an annual two-day summit that brings together the best and brightest storytellers from all over the world, from Vince Kadlubek, the creator of Santa Fe’s mystery-laced immersive storytelling experience Meow Wolf, to Wendy Calhoun, the woman behind some of primetime’s most diverse and compelling dramas such as Empire and Nashville. Each of these storytellers is forging the future of storytelling—together—by sharing their innovations in what it means to create in the 21st century.

How to embrace tech in storytelling?

Unlike storytellers of the past, today’s storytellers have a new challenge: discovering how to harness the power of technology in an ever-changing digital landscape. These storytellers haven’t just embraced technology—they’ve used it to make their work even better.

What challenges exist as a creator?

From ensuring the audience feels safe and comfortable engaging in new technology to designing experiences that bring people together (not push them apart), creators are constantly challenging themselves to create work that inspires and does good.

Is there a new role for the audience?

More than ever before, the audience has an opportunity not to just watch or listen to a story, but to be a full participant in it. From theater to virtual reality experiences you can smell, today’s storytellers are constantly dreaming up new ways to bring stories to life.

What is the future of storytelling?

The future of storytelling is one that uses technology for good, fostering empathy, caring, and connection among creators and audiences. The future is a place of magic, where the impossible becomes possible and the opportunities to share—and receive—stories are limitless.

The origin of FoST

Like most everyone in the world of print, the Great Recession of the mid-2010s left Charlie Melcher with a difficult decision: whether to push forward with his book packaging company, Melcher Media. As the old adage goes, “necessity is the mother of invention;” and instead of closing up shop, Charles decided to push in an entirely new direction: digital. This decision led to the creation of Future of StoryTelling, a business built around a central community of people from the worlds of media, technology, and communications who are exploring how storytelling is evolving in the modern age—together.
