Summarize a meeting? Draft an email? Create an executive summary of a presentation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt doesn\u2019t have to be formal,\u201d Oxford says. \u201cThe objective can be something loose like, \u2018brainstorm some ideas for a document.\u2019 I often just brain-dump with it. I\u2019ll have all these thoughts swirling in my head, and they&#8217;re not quite formulated. It can feel intimidating to look at a blank page and not know how to fill it up. This gives me something to react to. Are you trying to reach a manager with 20 years of experience? A new entry-level employee? An IT pro? A busy CEO?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTell that to the tool,\u201d Lundy says. \u201cWe\u2019ve found it performs better depending on whether you tell it stuff like it\u2019s an internal email celebrating a win versus an external communication to customers.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-898c828d wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/insidetrack\/blog\/uploads\/prod\/2024\/02\/4-icon-50x50-1.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Create parameters<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether you want to sound informal, professional, or somewhere in between, Copilot can help you best when it understands what you\u2019re looking for in terms of tone, length, word count, or any other limitations or boundaries you set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, a highly technical, hour-long presentation at a conference will have a different tone than a tweet. A humorous tone is probably not appropriate for a message to an executive. Conversely, a formal tone might not be the best idea for a social media post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here again, the quality of the output is contingent upon the quality of the input. Tell Copilot whether you expect a 6th-grade reading level or the level required to understand an academic paper. A summary meant for someone in the C-suite will have different parameters from a consumer-facing blog post. You&#8217;ll be surprised at how much better the results are when you give Copilot clear instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, you can keep it casual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople tend to skimp on context because they don&#8217;t necessarily want to put in the work, and they kind of expect the tool to read their minds,\u201d Lundy says. \u201cYou might see that the content is great, but that it\u2019s not exactly what you wanted. If you go a little deeper and add something like, \u2018Make sure you touch on these three items,\u2019 you can get dramatically better results, which can help you avoid having to make edits later.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don\u2019t necessarily have to write a long prompt for it to be effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGive it some bullet points so it knows about those things that you already know in your mind you want to be included, even if you haven&#8217;t completely thought it through,\u201d Lundy says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She adds that prompting gets faster as you go. One of the main lessons from our Customer Zero testing is that prompting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/worklab\/the-art-and-science-of-working-with-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">involves both art and science<\/a>, and it requires experimentation to see how you can get the most out of it for your own purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPlay around with it,&#8221; Oxford says. &#8220;Have fun with it. You can&#8217;t break it, so just experiment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to helping her brainstorm and get past the dreaded blank page, Oxford uses Copilot to help her offload mundane tasks so she can focus on more productive and creative work. Using a smart framework for prompts can help you do that too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou don&#8217;t need any technical skills,\u201d Oxford says. \u201cYou just have to help Copilot figure out how it can help you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We learn more by the day about best practices for using this incredible tool, and everything we learn, we
