What

Consumers can throw away their password cheat sheets and sticky notes on their monitor. They now can log into favorite Web sites* and the PC with the touch of a finger. Microsoft Corp. introduces its first hardware products with fingerprint recognition technology a desktop, mouse and stand-alone fingerprint reader designed to deliver added convenience by replacing frequently used passwords with the users fingerprint.

Format

The products operate on Windows-based PCs and use a standard USB connection. The desktop ships with DigitalPersona Password Manager software, IntelliType Pro keyboard software for easy key programmability, and IntelliPoint mouse software, which is necessary for full functionality of the scroll wheel with Tilt Wheel Technology and programmable buttons. The mouse ships with IntelliPoint mouse software and DigitalPersona Password Manager software.

Product Description

Optical Desktop with Fingerprint Reader includes a wired keyboard, Wireless Optical Mouse and receiver. Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer with Fingerprint Reader is a wireless mouse and receiver combination. The Fingerprint Reader is also sold separately.

Features and Benefits

New! The Fingerprint Reader replaces user names and passwords with the users unique fingerprint, delivering a convenient solution for the majority of consumers who have trouble remembering their passwords.** Consumers can use the reader to log on to favorite Web sites with a touch of a finger, or switch users on the PC quickly and easily. The Fingerprint Reader is located on the keyboard (Optical Desktop with Fingerprint Reader), on the receiver (Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer with Fingerprint Reader) or as a stand-alone product (Fingerprint Reader).

Keyboard With Fingerprint Reader

Consumers can access most-used Web sites, files and folders with one touch with the included My Favorites Keys. Users simply push and hold the key to assign it to the current destination, just as they would with a car stereos preset buttons. The key assignments also move with a users own settings. In addition, simply pushing the Show Favorites Key reveals the current assignment of each of the five My Favorites Keys.

Multimedia center offers one-touch control of music, video and more. Controls are sized according to usage just as they are on a remote control; for example, the volume controls the most commonly used media function are the largest and are placed in the center for convenient access.

Customizable Hot Keys, including Messenger, Mail and Web/Home, quickly launch favorite programs with one touch. Favorites in My Documents, My Pictures and My Music also are within easy reach.

Enhanced F Keys make it easy to complete common tasks with one touch. Keys are conveniently grouped according to usage patterns, such as New, Open and Close. Users also can set traditional F Key functions with the F Key lock.

Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer With Fingerprint Reader

Mouse scroll wheel with proprietary Tilt Wheel Technology delivers additional productivity. Consumers can use the mouse wheel to scroll vertically and horizontally, which is perfect for navigating long Web pages or spreadsheets. They also can depress the wheel to toggle between open windows.

Enhanced Microsoft Optical Technology provides increased accuracy and precision with an efficient optical sensor that delivers longer battery life than ever greater than six months for most users.

Smart receiver makes 27MHz wireless technology even more intelligent. The included smart receiver and intuitive software notify users when other wireless devices cause interference and offer ways to reduce it. Microsoft is a leader in the industry for working to reduce the likelihood of interference by using 65,000 random identification codes.

Wireless freedom allows users to sit back and click up to six feet away from the receiver, even if it is out of sight. No wires on the desk also mean less clutter and a more organized space.

The finger grooves and thumb scoop make the mouse easier to grip and encourage natural hand and forearm positioning.

Five buttons, including the wheel, can be easily reprogrammed to perform popular commands with a single touch. The side buttons are set by default for easy forward and backward Internet navigation.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or later, or MSN Explorer 8.0 and 9.0; Web site password replacement is supported for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or later and MSN Explorer 8.0 and 9.0

Internet Hot Keys are supported for use with Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.0 or later; MSN Explorer versions 7.0 or 8.0; Netscape Navigator version 6.1, 6.2 and 7.0; and AOL version 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0.

Multimedia Hot Keys are supported for use with versions of Microsoft CD Player, Microsoft Deluxe CD, Microsoft Windows Media Player and certain versions of other popular media players and browsers.

Microsoft Optical Desktop with Fingerprint Reader, Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer with Fingerprint Reader and Fingerprint Reader are scheduled to be available in September 2004 for an estimated retail price of $104, $84 and $64, respectively.**** Optical Desktop with Fingerprint Reader, Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer with Fingerprint Reader and Fingerprint Reader are backed by a three-year limited hardware warranty from Microsoft in the United States and Canada. Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer with Fingerprint Reader is backed by a five-year limited hardware warranty from Microsoft in the United States and Canada.
