Set up your Surface after service

After a service request, you'll need to set up your Surface, install updates, restore your files, and reinstall your apps.

Step 1: Complete setup

Turn on your Surface and complete setup.

Important
  • Connect to Wi-Fi when you set up your Surface. Syncing or sending data across a mobile broadband connection could result in extra charges against your data plan. For more info, see Manage your mobile broadband data usage.
  • Use the same Microsoft account you used on your original Surface. This lets you access your same settings, calendar, contacts and email.

Step 2: Install Surface and Windows updates

Once setup is complete, install the latest Surface and Windows updates. Here’s how:

Step 1:  Go to Start Windows logo, and select Settings > Update & security > Windows Update.
Step 2:  Select Check for updates. If updates are available, select Details.
Step 3:  Select the updates you want to install and select Install.
You may need to restart your Surface after the updates have installed.

Step 3: Restore your files

Add your files that you previously backed up, as recommended in How to prepare your Surface for service.

Use OneDrive

If you backed up your files to OneDrive, you can access them whenever you need them. For more info about using OneDrive, see Using One Drive on Surface.

Other ways to restore your files

Use the steps below to restore your files if you used one of these backup methods.

  • File History. Select the search box in the taskbar, enter restore file, and in the search results, select Restore your files with File History.
  • File Explorer. You can copy files manually to your Documents, Videos, Pictures and Music libraries from another storage location within File Explorer in Windows.

Step 4: Reinstall your apps

When you get a Surface back from our service centre, you’ll need to reinstall your Windows Store apps and other software you may have, like Microsoft Office.

Reinstall Windows Store apps

Step 1:  Go to Start Windows logo, and select All apps > Store.
Step 2:  Select your account picture and select My Library.
Step 3:  Choose the apps or games you want to install and select Install.

Reinstall Microsoft Office

If you have an active Office 365 subscription or you own a copy of Office 2013, the steps to reinstall Office will depend on the version of Office you have.

Office 365. If you have an active Office 365 subscription, you can reinstall Office by signing in to your Office 365 account at Office.com/myaccount.

Office 2013. If you own a copy Office 2013, you’ll need to have your 25-character product key to reinstall and activate Office.

Notes
  • If your copy of Office 2013 wasn’t included as part of your Surface purchase—for example, you bought your copy at a store or from an online retailer—select Office on the Microsoft support page to find out about your options for getting a replacement product key for Office 2013.
  • If your Surface came with a copy of Office 2013 (not available in all countries or regions) and you exchanged your Surface for a replacement, your original Office product key won’t work on your replacement Surface. To get a replacement product key, contact us.

Step 1:  Swipe in from the right edge of the screen and tap Settings.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the top-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and click Settings.)
Step 2:  Tap or click Change PC settings > Update and recovery.
Step 3:  Tap or click Check now. If updates are available, tap or click View details.
Step 4:  Choose the updates you want to install, and tap or click Install.
You may need to restart Surface after the updates have installed.

Step 3: Restore your files

Add your files that you previously backed up, as recommended in How to prepare your Surface for service.

Use OneDrive

If you backed up your files to OneDrive using either the OneDrive app or File Explorer on the desktop, you can access them whenever you need them. For more info about using OneDrive, see Using One Drive on Surface.

Other ways to restore your files

Use the steps below to restore your files if you used one of these backup methods.

  • File History. On the Start screen, swipe in from the right edge, tap or click Search, and in the search box, enter restore file. Then tap or click Restore your files with File History.
  • File Explorer. You can copy files manually to your Documents, Videos, Pictures and Music libraries from another storage location within File Explorer in Windows.
  • HomeGroup. To restore your files from a homegroup, see HomeGroup from start to finish for tips.

Step 4: Reinstall your apps

When you get a Surface back from our service centre, you’ll need to reinstall your Windows Store apps and other software you may have, like Microsoft Office.

Step 1:  On the Start screen, tap or click Store.
Step 2:  Select Account > My apps.
Step 3:  Tap or click the apps you want to install, and tap or click Install.

Reinstall Microsoft Office

If you have an active Office 365 subscription, or you own a copy of Office 2013, the steps to reinstall Office will depend on the version of Office you have.

Office 365. If you have a Surface Pro model or Surface 3 and an active Office 365 subscription, you can reinstall Office by signing in to your Office 365 account at Office.com/myaccount.

Step 4: Reinstall your apps

When you get a Surface back from our service centre, you’ll need to reinstall your Windows Store apps and other software you may have, like Microsoft Office.

Reinstall Windows Store apps

Step 1:  On the Start screen, tap or click Store.
Step 2:  Tap or click Account > My apps.
Step 3:  Tap or click the apps you want to install, and tap or click Install.

Reinstall Microsoft Office

After service, your Surface RT or Surface 2 comes with Office 2013 RT apps pre-installed, so you don’t need to reinstall Office. To start an Office app like Word or PowerPoint, go to the Start screen, and tap or click the Office app tile.
