Installing the Windows 10 Team Anniversary Update on Surface Hub if you use WSUS or a proxy server

Feature upgrades in the Windows 10 Team Anniversary Update 1607 (KB3194496) are not yet available through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). All previous updates will continue to be available on the service.

The Windows 10 Team Anniversary Update will release to customers through Windows Update starting on October 13. The update will be released in stages with the goal to make it available to all customers by early November. Starting on the 13th, customers can perform a manual installation using the “Check for Updates” feature.

There is a requirement for the Surface Hub to utilize a direct update path from the Windows Update servers to ensure correct installation. Here are the currently approved update installation options for Surface Hub Administrators. These options are specific for this update.

If you use WSUS and have access to public-facing Internet

Important
If you have not updated the Surface Hub to the latest build, you may need to install the latest updates before upgrade installation can begin. Additionally, there may be a need to re-check for updates after each update confirmation to ensure that your Surface Hub device is on the final build.
  1. Disable the WSUS option in Settings to receive the standard Windows Update package:
    1. Select Settings > Update & Security.
    2. Under Windows Update, select Advanced Options.
    3. Select Configure Windows Server Update Service (WSUS) server.
    4. In the dialog box, clear the Use WSUS Server to download updates checkbox.
  2. Update Surface Hub to current build:
    1. On the Windows Update setting page, select Check for updates to begin downloading the currently available updates.
    2. Select I’m Done to automatically update the Surface Hub to the Team Anniversary Update when the device is not in use. You can also force the upgrade by returning to the Windows Update setting page and selecting Check for updates.

Other public-facing update items will be part of the update package that is downloaded. For example, Defender updates, a device Flash update, and others that may launch prior to the Media Refresh may be included.

  1. After the upgrade, has finished, configure the Surface Hub to use WSUS:
    1. Select Settings > Update & Security.
    2. Under Windows Update, select Advanced Options.
    3. Select Configure Windows Server Update Service (WSUS) server.
    4. In the dialog box, select the Use WSUS Server to download updates checkbox and enter the address for your WSUS server.

If you use a proxy server or other method to block URLs

If you use a method other than WSUS to block specific URLs and prevent updates, you will need to add the following Windows update trusted site URLs to the “allow list”:

  • http(s)://*.update.microsoft.com
  • http://download.windowsupdate.com

Once the Windows 10 Team Anniversary Update is installed, you can remove these addresses to return your Surface Hub to its previous state.

If you can only use WSUS

If you are required to use only WSUS, Microsoft plans to offer an updated Media Refresh package across all Windows platforms. The Media Refresh package will be available in the coming months and can be utilized for installing updates by using WSUS.
