Watch TV shows, movies and videos

You can use the Video app to watch home videos on Surface, and you can rent or buy TV programmes and films from the Xbox Video Store.

Video app on Surface

The Video app uses the service for films and TV programmes. And it features Instant-on streaming in HD, so you don’t have to wait for anything to download. Just start watching.

Play videos from your video library

Here's how to play videos from your video library:

Step 1:  From the Start screen, tap or click Video.
If you’re prompted, sign in with your Microsoft account.
Step 2:  Scroll left and then tap or click personal videos

Add videos to your video library

Videos in your Videos library appear in the Video app. For help copying videos to your Videos folder, see Move files to your Surface.

Play videos over your home network

If your videos are stored on another computer that’s part of your home network, or homegroup, you can join the homegroup and watch your videos without copying them to your Surface. To learn how to watch files on your home network, see Share files on a home network.

  • To see which formats are supported by the Video app, see Which file types can Surface use?
  • For a bigger sound, connect external speakers to the headset jack or USB port on your Surface, or wirelessly connect speakers using Bluetooth®.
  • To see your videos when the app opens, in the Video app, open the Settings charm, click or tap Preferences, then under Open my personal videos when I start the app, click or tap On.

Browse, buy and rent movies and TV shows

Use the Video app to buy or rent the latest movies or buy TV shows (where available) that you love directly from Xbox Video. With Instant-on streaming in HD, you don't have to wait for it to download. Just start watching.


Here's how:

Step 1:  From the Start screen, tap or click Video.
Step 2:  Scroll to see movie and TV choices, browse the categories or search for a specific movie or TV show.
Step 3:  Select your movie or show, tap or click to buy or rent and then follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Videos that you buy or rent from Xbox Video are charged to the payment option on your Microsoft account. To see info about your account, from the Video app, open the Settings charm, then click or tap Account.
  • You can stream your videos to your TV by using Play To or Xbox SmartGlass.
