The Asians at Microsoft Intersectionality series is an important initiative aimed at fostering understanding, empathy, and unity among all within the broader Microsoft Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) community, promoting connection and collaboration. “The essence of this series is that we are all multidimensional,” says Sneha Rao, Microsoft Partner Lead and member of Asians at Microsoft ANZ.
The series is structured as quarterly discussion sessions hosted together with other Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to explore commonalities and celebrate differences between our diverse groups.
Key themes from the first hybrid sessions held in 2023 and 2024 covered:
Exploring intersectionality in our daily lives
This conversation delved into the intricate web of inner and outer conflicts that stem from our identities, cultures, beliefs, and societies. Participants talked about what it’s like to be within the LGBTQIA+ community and have Asian heritage. Commonalities and experiences were shared through unique Asian-flavoured personal stories.
Insight: It’s important to recognise that our lives and identities are a tapestry woven from countless threads and that we need to embrace intersectionality in our daily lives.
Around 50 employees participated at each session, highlighting the value for people in engaging across our broader ERG communities and with allies. The ongoing series has been instrumental in creating a platform for open dialogue and sharing of diverse experiences, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and supportive community at Microsoft ANZ.
Journey from East to West
In collaboration with Families at Microsoft ANZ, this discussion looked at the unique struggles and triumphs faced by individuals who have migrated across the globe.
Insight: We all share similar challenges when starting a new life in a different country, where it’s important to embrace and celebrate your heritage and identity.
Balancing culture and career
This session, in partnership with Women at Microsoft ANZ, explored the topic of balancing cultural demands with career aspirations. Speakers shared their insights on navigating cultural expectations while advancing in their professional lives.
Insight: It is important to dispel the myth that exists about Asian women in the workforce: “There is a misconception that Asia women don’t want career advancement because they are nurturers, very family oriented. Just because we have strong cultural values that ground us back to our families,” says Sneha Rao, Microsoft Partner Lead and member of Asians at Microsoft ANZ.
Understanding the mixed experience
This event, delivered together with the Indigenous at Microsoft Australia ERG focused on the lived experiences of individuals who identify as mixed race. It featured a panel of Microsoft ANZ employees sharing their personal stories and challenges related to their mixed heritage.
Insight: The discussion raised awareness of similarities between Asian and First Nations groups, like the importance of family and respect for elders.
