Following the untimely death of their parents in a car accident, sixteen-year-old Bailey Salinger and his siblings -- Julia, fifteen, twelve-year-old Claudia and Owen, one -- are left in the care of their older brother, twenty-four-year-old Charlie. However, with Charlie spending time with his older girlfriend Joanna, Bailey gets a new Jeep after being sent to buy the family a station wagon while Julia uses a scholarship to buy a new leather jacket. Then the Salingers are faced with plumbing repairs and finding a new nanny to care for Owen. After missing an important family dinner, Julia appropriates their parent's old bedroom from Charlie to use as her own while Claudia, a prodigious violin player whose musical talents have overwhelmed the rest of her life, offers to quit her lessons and pawns her instrument in order to save money. Then, Charlie is forced to admit that it has left them without any income for the next six months. So, in the wake of his financial reversal, Charlie moves back home intent on fulfilling his role as the family's court-appointed guardian. Meanwhile, as Julia bristles at losing her room and Claudia moves into a tent in the dining room, Bailey starts looking for a job to help with their mounting bills. After Charlie insists that Claudia not give up her lessons and Julia is dumped by her would-be boyfriend, Bailey insists that his older brother get a job. Reminded of her enormous talent by her violin teacher, Claudia then retrieves her instrument from the pawn shop in order to resume playing, while Charlie approaches the owner of their late father's bar & grill for a loan to help them get by. However, when Joe offers him a job instead, Charlie becomes Salinger's new bartender. Then, after Bailey hires a beautiful young nanny in a deal that allows them to share the Jeep, he, Claudia and Owen arrive for their regular family meal at Salinger's to find that their brother hard at work.

As Bailey develops a serious crush on Kirsten, Julia and her best friend Libby realize their good study habits haven't made them very popular and decide to skip an evening of studying to attend a party. Unsure about how to handle the situation, Bailey turns to Charlie for advice, unaware that Kirsten is interested in his older brother, who himself is seeing an older woman. As Bailey makes up a story about an imaginary friend in order to get Kirsten's attention, Claudia asks a private investigator to search for Jack Gordon, the Salinger's long lost grandfather. Yet, when faced with the high cost, Claudia accepts the detective's bit of free advice and decides to look on her own. Having enjoyed the party, Julia and Libby are caught by surprise with a quiz the following day, while Charlie discovers that his thirty-five year old girlfriend is more interested in his sexual prowess than his career ambitions. Then, after Bailey tries to impress Kirsten by cooking dinner himself, he overhears her planning a date with his older brother. Meanwhile, given a chance to erase her poor quiz score, Julia decides to forgo the assignment for another party. After finding a Jack Gordon living on a boat in San Francisco, Claudia is certain she has found their grandfather, even though Charlie and Bailey both refuse to believe it. Told of his attraction for Kirsten, Charlie counsels Bailey to drop the fantasy, while Libby fails to persuade Julia to forgo the party to study together. But upon finding Bailey struggling with his own homework, Julia ends up spending the evening helping him, forcing her to accept the consequences of skipping her own extra credit assignment. Going to see Gordon himself, Bailey learns he is not their grandfather and, while not wanting to believe it, Claudia learns to accept the truth. Finally, Charlie realizes how much distress he has caused Bailey and cancels his date with Kirsten.

However, when some angry opposing players come looking for revenge, Adam fights back and damages school property. However, when he faces suspension, Kirsten suggests Bailey seek legal advice from her boyfriend, George. Yet, upon going to George's office, Charlie finds he lied to Kirsten about his status at the firm. Meanwhile, when Julia hosts another party, Claudia protests, while maintaining his silence, Bailey is punished and not allowed to practice with the team. After arguing with Adam about being made to suffer, Bailey is lectured by Charlie about the consequences of his loyalty. Meanwhile, as they are preparing for the weekly family dinner, Nina arrives to announce that a big party about to happen at the Salinger's. Deciding to maintain his silence to keep the trust of his teammates, Bailey then defends his decision to Charlie. Told that George is actually a paralegal, Kirsten angrily questions Charlie's motive for the disclosure while, after complaining about the damage to her house, Julia is ostracized by her new friends and tries making amends with Claudia. However, when Nina apologizes and makes good on some of the damage, Julia seizes the moment to cement their friendship. Finally, Kirsten applauds Bailey's loyalty.

Learning that the team actually won without him, Bailey is even more upset to find that his replacement secured victory for the hapless team. Meanwhile, with some encouragement from a friend, Kirsten decides to pursue a relationship with Charlie, as Claudia's pointed questions and Nina's talk of a new boyfriend all combine to convince Julia that she needs some firsthand experience with sex. Put to bed by Charlie after having a few too many drinks, Kirsten agrees to another date. But, when she is approached by Julia for some advice on sex, Kirsten discovers she was the on the receiving end of the suave lines Charlie has used with many other women. Meanwhile, Bailey falls for a flirtatious customer at the shoe store, while Julia decides to use Justin in order to get some experience under her belt. Realizing she is upset, Charlie persuades Kirsten to try another date, as Julia and Nina shop for condoms prior to her date with Justin. After Bailey's prank brings Kate back to the store and he persuades her to join him for a date, he learns she already has a boyfriend. As Julia makes plans to see Justin when his parents are out, Kirsten, and Charlie are forced to postpone their date to care for a teething Owen. Encouraged by Claudia and Will, Bailey decides to continue his pursuit of Kate, while Nina's being unceremoniously dumped right after a sexual liaison causes Julia to think twice about seducing Justin. Meanwhile, Bailey quits his job in order to surprise Kate. Finally, a confused Julia seeks solace with her younger sister as Charlie and Kirsten finally get a chance to spend the night together.

Insulted when she realizes that Charlie fears she wants to exchange her failed marriage for a relationship with him, Rebecca walks out. Meanwhile, when Kate arrives to return his gift, Bailey delivers an ultimatum -- choose either him or Tom. Finally, after apologizing to Claudia, Julia admits to her own deception in getting the job, while Kate surprises Bailey by dumping Tom.

Meanwhile, although Kate tries convincing him that her father's restrictions can easily be avoided, Bailey chooses to confront Mr. Elliot and argue his case in person. Though ignoring any suggestions that he get help to deal with his abusive dad, P.K. accepts the $150 Julia made working at the club to help him on his way. Turning to Joe to repay the money he borrowed, Charlie agrees to stay on at the restaurant... but only for as long as it takes to get the business back on its feet. Arriving at the emergency room to help, Charlie calls and interrupts Bailey's plans to have dinner alone with Kate. Meanwhile, Claudia tries to forget about her family's problems by inviting Ross to the restaurant -- until a phone call alerts her to the emergency, too. With the doctor worried that Owen may have meningitis, Charlie and Bailey both agree to a potentially dangerous test to check for the virus. However, refusing to take her brother's phone calls at work, Julia remains unaware of Owen's condition until Charlie arrives to tell her in person. Though everyone else waits anxiously for the test results, memories of their parent's death at the hospital make it impossible for Claudia to join them. As Charlie lectures Julia about responsibility and criticizes her drinking, Bailey returns home to apologize Claudia for his lapse. While Julia tries persuading Kirsten to give Charlie another chance, they learn that Owen will be okay as Claudia suddenly arrives to be with her family.

Having already delayed work on the desk to care for Owen, Charlie fires his sitter when she arrives drunk. And, as Claudia's self-absorption causes her to stop doing her household chores, Charlie is forced to take more responsibility for Julia's absences. Meanwhile, impressed with how much Bailey did for the party, Margaret claims her daughter couldn't have found a better boyfriend, unaware that he is preoccupied with having sex with Kate. Confronted by Charlie, Julia promises to stop skipping class but insists on the freedom to find her own way. When a broken sander jeopardizes the desk, Charlie turns to his siblings. Although Bailey and Julia pitch in, Claudia refuses to help. Yet, upon seeing them happily working and sharing their problems, Claudia offers her assistance, only to have it refused. After delivering the desk on time and getting paid much more than he bid, Charlie drops by a concert and sees that Claudia is growing uncomfortable with her role as child prodigy. Finally, Julia is inspired to continue writing when she hears what Danny did with her poem.

Meanwhile, Charlie sets out to find a nanny he isn't attracted to, while Claudia is taken aback when Ross admits he is gay. When his blind date doesn't work out, matters become even more complicated when Greer fails to see the effect she is having on a love-struck Bailey. And finding that Julia wrote an $800 check to pay for the pictures, Charlie decides they all may have had enough of Greer's advice. When Julia returns for her photo session, Charlie discovers that Greer doesn't really know the photographer. Realizing that things are going badly, Greer decides it would be best to leave. But Bailey needs to find out if his attraction to her is mutual and tracks Greer down at a hotel. Though she admits to being tempted, Greer gently rebuffs Bailey's advances. Meanwhile, when his disclosure ruins their relationship, Ross decides it would be best if he and Claudia stopped working together. When she brings Bailey home, Greer is forced to admit she lied about the photographer. And, when Charlie exposes more lies she has told, Greer claims she only did it to make the Salingers feel better about themselves. Though everyone is upset with her trail of lies, before long they begin to see that they worked. Julia's self confidence is restored when her photos land her a modeling job, and Bailey is convinced that he really did have a chance with Greer. Finally, the only nanny Charlie finds who he isn't interested in dating turns out to be a man, while Claudia apologizes after seeing how badly she treated Ross.

With the approach of the first Thanksgiving since their parent's accident, the Salingers decide not to make it a big deal. But the holiday is put into a whole new light when the drunk driver responsible for their parent's deaths is released from prison and wants a meeting to apologize. Although Charlie and Bailey are adamantly against the idea, their sisters aren't so sure. And, after asking Julia about the trial, Claudia heads for Walter Alcott's bookstore just to see what he looks like. Hearing of her visit, Bailey's own anger is too much to contain, and even suggests suing Walter to punish him further. Seeking forgiveness of her own, Walter's teenaged daughter, Annie, surprises Julia with an unannounced visit. Then, despite his pledge, Bailey goes to see Walter, venting his own anger and frustration. When Bailey insists that she never see her again, Julia gently rebuffs Annie's effort to become friends while, needing someone to talk to, Bailey turns to Kate, who suggests that he let go of his anger and get on with his life. Meanwhile, Claudia panics after losing a valuable bracelet she borrowed without Julia's permission. To replace it, she asks Charlie for a loan... of $5,000! Hoping to help heal everyone's wounds, Julia calls on the Alcotts before deciding to make a day-after- Thanksgiving dinner on her own. As she pitches in to help, Claudia finally confesses to having lost the bracelet, only to learn that it was only a worthless trinket. Meanwhile, unable to keep his own guilt bottled up any longer, Charlie makes his pilgrimage to see Walter. While there, he admits it was his own irresponsible behavior that caused his parents to be late for a concert, placing them in the deadly path of Walter's car. Finally, after their post-Thanksgiving dinner, the Salingers start putting their lives back together with a visit to their parent's grave.

As Charlie admits he is taking a college architecture course, Bailey and Julia try learning as much as they can about Claudia before Mrs. Gideon returns. But their prying becomes too much, forcing Claudia's new boyfriend to leave in the middle of a date. Pressed to be there for Mrs. Gideon, Charlie finds himself in a bind by a class assignment that makes it impossible. And, when their nanny's jury duty leaves them without any child care, Bailey asks Kirsten to come back just for Mrs. Gideon's visit. Meanwhile, after Bailey gives away his secret, Charlie explodes, revealing that he is dropping because of family obligations. Seeing through their fragile act, Mrs. Gideon reveals that Claudia isn't really working at a restaurant, and that Bailey is failing in school. Now aware they all have been keeping secrets, the Salingers face the possibility of being split up. Despite a decision to drop the uniforms, Julia quits the club but manages to keep a possible romantic relationship with Morgan alive, while Charlie and Bailey encourage each other to stay in school. Worried that she caused their problems, Claudia goes to see Mrs. Gideon. But, bearing some advice from Mrs. Gideon, Claudia returns home with good news.

However, while Claudia's showing up at Artie's karate class backfires, Julia goes to see Morgan at home, only to find him there with someone else. And when Claudia decides to make Artie jealous, she only causes him to lose interest in her altogether. Meanwhile, Kate offers to sleep with Bailey before she leaves. When Julia claims to be the Salinger's nanny, Morgan's admission that the "woman" he was with was his young daughter forces her to reconsider her own lack of candor. Realizing her own mistake, Claudia asks Julia for advice before telling Artie that all she really wants to be is his friend again. Armed with Charlie's advice on sex, Bailey heads off on his secret weekend getaway with Kate. However, after realizing that she is doing it just for him, he decides to wait. Then, just as she is about to come clean with Morgan, a surprise inspection of the club suddenly places Julia's job, and their relationship, in jeopardy. Finally, Charlie learns that Kirsten needs more than his companionship in bed. And, while she doesn't have cancer, she won't ever be able to have children of her own.

And, after Bailey sticks Will with a pair of concert tickets at the last minute, they are offered a stolen copy of an important chemistry exam by Jill. Meanwhile, when Artie is asked to star in their school play instead of her, Claudia concludes that it's only because he's a boy. Already feeling threatened by Kirsten's handsome new dissertation advisor, Charlie's suspicions increase when he discovers they were at the movies instead of working. Though apologizing for jumping to conclusions, he explodes when Kirsten and Ben attend a faculty dinner party together. Julia soon learns that she and Libby are after the same boy. Unaware that she wants to use it as an opportunity to get a date, Justin offers to give Julia driving lessons himself. Meanwhile, after she makes him stand outside in the rain, Artie takes ill and forces Claudia into the play's starring role. As a small earthquake strikes the city, Charlie complains about Bailey and Jill having sex in the house, while Julia fights her growing attraction to her best friend Libby's boyfriend, Justin. When Charlie reveals that a student in his design class is interested in starting a furniture company together, Kirsten offers to loan him $7,000 to get going. Meanwhile, as Charlie suspects Jill is a drug addict, an accident in the school's darkroom ends with Justin and Julia locked in a passionate kiss. And, when Justin dumps her, Libby asks Julia to find out if there's another girl in his life. Bailey rummages through Jill's purse and finds a bag full of pills. As Kirsten starts offering Charlie and his partner advice on how to run their new business, an aftershock prompts Claudia to upgrade the family's disaster plans. Confronted about the drugs, Jill struggles. to convince Bailey that she doesn't have a problem and even flushes her pills down the toilet to prove it. Unable to live with the guilt, Julia decides to tell Libby about her and Justin. But, before she can, Libby figures it out on her own. Impatient with her constant meddling, Charlie asks Kirsten to remain a silent partner in the new venture or take her money back. Meanwhile, Claudia sees Jill rummaging through the Salinger's medicine cabinet for some painkillers. When the family learns of the theft, Charlie says that Jill is not allowed in the house anymore. Then, while shopping for a much-needed refrigerator, Charlie and Kirsten's disagreement boils over. As a result of their attempts to please one another, the Salingers end up with two refrigerators. Though Julia apologizes, she finds Libby in no mood to forgive. And, upon seeing Justin again, she begins having reservations about their relationship. Bailey is persuaded by Jill not to abandon her as she promises to quit using drugs. Finally, hoping to sooth Claudia's nerves, Charlie and Julia promise to take the threat of earthquakes more seriously.

When Bailey suspects that she may be using drugs again, Jill denies it. Yet, a car accident she has seems to suggest otherwise, especially to Charlie. Warned by Kirsten that he's spending too little time with Owen, Charlie agrees to join a father's support group, where he quickly discovers that her observation may be true. Meanwhile, as Julia admits she's romantically involved with her old friend Justin, Claudia discovers that Artie's parents are nearing divorce -- and decides to bring them back together. Although Bailey wants to believe her, Charlie's evidence that Jill is using drugs is persuasive. Yet, when Bailey calls Jill's mother to warn her of the problem, Mrs. Holbrook accuses him of harassing her daughter. And though Charlie tries to convince him to just let her go, Bailey can't. As their romance grows, Julia tells Justin's mom all the details, sharing both a picture he drew and a poem he wrote. But when Justin finds out, he accuses Julia of betraying his trust. As he and Claudia struggle to try help friends up against seemingly impossible odds, Bailey learns that Jill has left on her own for Los Angeles. And when Claudia's attempt at reuniting his parents ends in failure, she asks Artie to accept his situation, regardless of how much he doesn't like it. Apologizing for revealing his secrets, Julia explains to Justin that she approached his mom because she was too excited to simply keep the details of their love affair to herself. Finally, as Justin encourages more contact between his mom and Julia, Mrs. Holbrook realizes that Bailey was right when he tried to warn her about Jill.

Despite her best efforts, Claudia can't seem to get anyone interested in her birthday. Bailey is in Los Angeles to find Jill, and Charlie's furniture business with Gwen is about to take off. And when she's invited to join him as part of a songwriting team, Julia discovers that her friend Danny is infected with AIDS. Yet, once they finally do get the hint, Julia and Charlie turn to a professional to plan their little sister's party. Meanwhile, after Bailey persuades her to return to San Francisco, Jill talks him into making a romantic vacation out of the trip back home. At home, Claudia is perplexed by the party planner, as well as with the expensive camera Julia bought as a gift. Yet when Kirsten decides to step in and help out, she quickly finds out how difficult it is to pull something together at the last minute. As Charlie demands that he get home as fast as possible, Bailey decides he's had just about enough of Jill and irresponsible behavior -- only to wake up the following morning to finds that she's run away again. After insisting that Julia leave the recording studio if she isn't going to produce lyrics for his songs, Danny apologizes for putting all the pressure for his success or failure on her. And as Bailey arrives back at home without Jill and gives Claudia the one present she's been waiting for, Julia arranges for Danny to hear his music played on the radio. Finally, as Claudia and her friends create havoc at a restaurant party, the Salingers realize that, regardless of what happens, they still have each another.

But when he raises the idea, Charlie learns that the deal will only happen if they make the move... and soon. Meanwhile, Bailey's poor performance on a test has caused him to be temporarily moved to a sophomore math class where Julia is assigned to be his tutor. Bailey finds Julia is too distracted by her romance with Justin to be much help with his math, while Claudia balks at her first lesson with a new and more demanding violin teacher. When Charlie insists that they have no choice but to go with him to Seattle, the news profoundly affects his siblings. Claudia vows to give up the violin altogether and Julia explores living with Justin and his family. Bailey insists he isn't going along either as he struggles to prepare for the crucial test. However, upset by his criticism of her and Justin, Julia leaves Bailey to study on his own. When Charlie announces that he's taken the job, he faces a full scale revolt and is accused of breaking up the family. After learning that his parents said no to the idea of her moving in, Julia puts Justin on hold in order to help Bailey. Though certain he must have failed the exam, when she asks his teacher to give him another chance, Julia learns that Bailey passed quite nicely on his own. Finally, after deciding she would like to continue with Ross as her teacher, Claudia discovers that Charlie sold his share of the company to Gwen in order to stay in San Francisco after all.

Although Charlie is determined to take Kirsten away for a romantic ski weekend alone, the responsibility of being in charge of the family isn't making it easy. First of all, Claudia's dental exam has made it clear that she hasn't been eating right, and Charlie's determined to do something about it. Then there's Owen's nanny, Bill, who wants a raise to cover an increase in his rent. Meanwhile, when a story she wrote is published after winning a contest, Julia worries about the unflattering portrait it paints of her family. And just as he's trying to get over losing Jill, Bailey is dealt a surprise -- a visit from his old girlfriend, Kate. Although Charlie and Kirsten make an unexpected appearance at the magazine awards ceremony, Julia is successful at keeping them from reading what her story. But she's not as lucky when it comes to Claudia and Bailey. And to guarantee their silence with Charlie, she agrees to be their slave. After hearing of Bill's financial problems and deciding on his own to give him a raise, Bailey arranges to meet Kate at the coffeehouse, where he's surprised when Jill returns. And though he leaves Kate once she arrives, Bailey just can't keep his mind off Jill. In open defiance of Charlie's attempts to reign her in, Claudia invites all her friends to the house for a party. So when he returns homes after finally getting a look at Julia's magazine article, Charlie's ready to do away with both his sisters. After trying to discipline Claudia and nearly losing his cool, Charlie is in for another rude awakening when he learns about Bill's raise. But when he goes looking for him to complain, Bailey is at the airport breaking up with Kate before going to find Jill to tell her he loves her. Finally, upset with how little respect he is being shown by his younger siblings, Charlie decides to move out.

Charlie is determined to find a place of his own, but Kirsten doesn't want to leave the others to care for themselves. Yet, when a former business partner tells Charlie of a vacant apartment, she decides it's worth a look. But then Claudia and Artie are witnesses to an armed robbery -- an episode which enhances Claudia's fears about Charlie's leaving just as much as it excites Artie about the prospect of participating in the investigation. Meanwhile, when Bailey doubts Jill can handle running a fundraising dance marathon at school, Julia's suggestion that they enter reveals that Justin can't dance. When a police line up fails to turn up their suspect, Claudia just wants the whole mess to be over while Artie is ecstatic about coming back to do it again. As the dance marathon gets underway with few problems, Bailey tries to help out, only to be deemed too pushy by Jill. And the event has also given Julia some new insight into Justin when she discovers a condom hidden in his wallet. And as Julia becomes increasingly uncomfortable with her newfound knowledge, Bailey infuriates Jill when he sides with a teacher's who wants to cut the marathon short. Meanwhile, though Charlie is excited by the party-like atmosphere of their new apartment building, Kirsten isn't so sure, especially after she returns home to find Claudia having nightmares. While out drinking with his new neighbor, Charlie begins to realize that he can't go back to his partying ways, especially after Claudia's nightmares continue unabated and Julia starts asking for advice about sex. So, as the success of the dance marathon convinces Jill that she can handle responsibility and solve problems without Bailey's help, Charlie decides he's needed at home and surprises Kirsten with his decision to move back. Finally, their discussion of the condom propels Julia and Justin into their first tentative explorations of sex.

After surviving a close call with pregnancy, Bailey's relief is crushed when he learns that Jill died from a drug overdose. As Bailey watches from across the street, Julia attends the funeral with Charlie and becomes intrigued by Jill's eighteen year-old brother, Griffin. And her fascination with this young loner grows when he arrives at the coffeehouse to retrieve his late sister's things. Meanwhile, Ross reveals that he is about to adopt a new baby girl. Despite Will's attempt to get him to talk about Jill's death, all Bailey wants to do is go out to a club where he then tests their friendship by insisting on driving home drunk. After finding the nerve to approach him, Julia is rebuffed by Griffin. Undaunted, she spots a coat Jill intended to buy her brother and gets it for Griffin herself. Then, as his big day approaches, Ross discovers that his homosexuality may keep him from adopting the baby after all. Meanwhile, Charlie decides to ask Kirsten to get married, only to be surprised when she asks him first. As Ross struggles with the thought of losing the daughter he was sure would be his, Bailey takes it upon himself to see the social worker in charge of the adoption to put in a good word for him. And after joining Griffin at the cemetery to make his own peace with Jill's death, he heads to the restaurant to find that his plea to the social worker worked. After breaking the news of his engagement to Bailey, Charlie surprises Kirsten with his mother's wedding ring. Finally, as they celebrate Ross becoming a father, the Salingers begin planning for the wedding in their future.
