Written by and starring Jessica Hynes, Up the Women is a charming sitcom following the efforts of timid, but radical, Edwardian matron Margaret and her quest to bring the fight for women’s suffrage to her small village of Banbury. Margaret is eager to embrace the modern world of 1910, and keen to convert the village’s women to campaign for votes for women. These include formidable socialite Helen, her outrageous sexually-charged elderly mother Myrtle, teenage rebel Emily, perpetually pregnant Eva and buck-toothed simpleton Gwen.
