WheelSim Home is a virtual e-wheelchair simulator that allows people with impairments of all ages to learn and train e-wheelchair control in a realistic simulation. For this purpose, WheelSim Home offers extensive training possibilities in different situations: Driving in the protected area of a training park with inclines and ramps, driving in an apartment including the use of a lift, driving on the street taking into account other road users such as pedestrians and vehicle drivers. In addition to basic skills in using the e-wheelchair, special emphasis is placed on teaching and reinforcing traffic-related rules of conduct in order to prepare for driving in road traffic. The traffic education content includes crossing a street with and without a crosswalk and can be practiced in the form of assignments in the virtual world. In addition, they are also presented in the form of short learning videos. Playful elements such as time trials on four different routes, assignments and badges are aimed at younger e-wheelchair users and increase long-term motivation. WheelSim Home is characterized by a simple menu navigation and offers important setting options to be adapted to the user. Thus, the maximum e-wheelchair speed can be set and also the key assignment can be adjusted. The keyboard, suitable gaming controllers such as the Optima joystick from Pretorian Technologies or alternative mouse devices such as joystick mice can be used for control. In addition, WheelSim Home can be used as a VR simulation using suitable VR glasses from the company Oculus (Rift, Rift S, Quest 1 & 2 + Oculus Link cable). Virtual Reality allows a more realistic experience and better interaction with the virtual world (immersion).
