Chad Atalla (they/them) is an Applied Scientist on MSR NYC’s Sociotechnical Alignment Center (STAC) team. Their educational background is in computer science (M.S. from UCSD) and initially joined Microsoft as an Applied Scientist working on language intelligence features in MSAI. There, they started a small Responsible AI team and built the first version of the AI risk measurement framework that Microsoft went on to use in the initial GPT-4 Bing Chat / Copilot release. Then, they joined MSR NYC’s new STAC team as an Applied Scientist with the charter of contributing to foundational Responsible AI research while serving it up as practical solutions for teams across the company. Now, Chad’s work focuses on the sociotechnical evaluation of risks and benefits associated with generative AI systems.
