ComAp drives global collaboration and innovation for improved sustainability with the Microsoft Cloud

ComAp is a world leader in intelligent control solutions for decentralized energy resources. The company has been supplying power-management solutions to end-customers like banks, hospitals, commercial complexes, and datacenters for more than 30 years. With more than 500 employees spread across 13 global locations and a network of more than 70 distributors, Czech Republic–based ComAp supplies energy control systems to customers worldwide.

However, the company’s success also created new technological challenges. Relying on increasingly aging technologies and workflows, ComAp knew it needed a way to enhance its global communication, collaboration, and innovation capabilities, both for itself and its customers. So, it turned to the Microsoft Cloud, using Azure, Dynamics 365, and Microsoft 365 to develop and deliver the digital-first prowess necessary to help its customers satisfy their sustainable and resilient power needs.

“With a boost from Azure and the Microsoft Cloud, ComAp is helping its customers meet their sustainability goals by introducing new innovations in the field of intelligent energy management and remote monitoring.”

Better communication and global collaboration

While ComAp had historically relied on email and in-person meetings for communications and team alignment, it began to realize many years ago that it needed a more strategic, digital-first way to deliver its customer-focused mission. So, the company chose Microsoft 365 to enhance its organizational communication and collaboration. “Our main priority was to ensure greater communication between people, regardless of where they are globally. With Microsoft 365 solutions like SharePoint and Teams, we can communicate without boundaries,” explains Václav Chaloupka, Chief Digital Officer at ComAp.

The company began with SharePoint for simplified file sharing, collaboration, and communication. Soon afterward, it deployed Microsoft Teams to enhance worldwide communications and collaboration. “Thanks to Teams, our employees feel as if they’re all working in the same office,” continues Chaloupka. And with Microsoft 365 E5 licensing, ComAp was also able to use Teams to communicate with its customers.

Driving the digital future

Experiencing success with its Microsoft 365 suite of productivity tools, ComAp looked to other Microsoft solutions to develop more innovative, digital-first workflows. The company is now using Dynamics 365 Finance to help manage key finance and operations functions like sales support, accounting, logistics, production planning, and inventory management. It also launched a new customer relationship management solution based on Power Apps with NAVERTICA, a Gold competency member of the Microsoft Partner Network. ComAp’s sales team now has a reliable, globally accessible sales solution that provides detailed overviews of in-flight business.

ComAp customers are also benefiting from the company’s innovations. ComAp used Azure to develop a new online product to provide customers with remote management and monitoring of their power plants or as a tool for automatic monitoring of wholesale electricity prices for smarter energy use. ComAp's WebSupervisor enables customers to manage and administer their energy resources remotely. The company's Spot Price Dispatch Tool, on the other hand, enables customers to use the power from the main grid only when financially optimal, and activates a facility's own power production in other cases. ComAp uses Azure Active Directory B2C to create digital identities and very secure sign-ins and Azure API Management to allow remote access for its customers. “Through Azure, we can offer our customers a uniform and coherent digital ecosystem for a highly secure and superior experience of our solutions,” Chaloupka says.

The company is also exploring how Azure Machine Learning might add value to its solutions. ComAp and Microsoft are working on developing various AI models to bring automation and predictability to its processes related to supply chain management, proactive sustainability and energy-saving solutions, and weather event management.

“Our world is undergoing a massive energy transition toward sustainable energy resources,” concludes Barbora Vajnarová, Marketing Communications Manager at ComAp. “Our goal is to support this transition by providing our customers with energy control solutions that will streamline sustainable sources of power usage on a global scale. The Microsoft Cloud is an important part in this mosaic. With a boost from Azure and the Microsoft Cloud, ComAp is helping its customers meet their sustainability goals by introducing new innovations in the field of intelligent energy management and remote monitoring.”
