ELSAN reinvents the patient journey with Microsoft Azure

ELSAN needed a solution to simplify patient journeys, reduce administrative burden, and support more personalized, efficient care at scale.

Built on Microsoft Azure, “Mon Espace Elsan Care” is a secure, end-to-end application that centralizes information and connects all stakeholders in the care process.

Co-designed with patients and caregivers, the app simplifies tasks, centralizes data, and enables more human, seamless support across every stage of care.

As a leading private healthcare provider in France, ELSAN puts innovation at the core of its strategy to deliver high-quality care. To achieve this, the group harnesses the potential of new technologies and relies on Microsoft Azure cloud services to develop digital tools designed with and for patients.

“We aim to make ELSAN a European benchmark in the digitalization of healthcare services,” says Thomas Daubigny, Chief Digital & Information Officer at ELSAN.
Among the group’s most recent innovations is “Mon Espace Elsan Care,” a patient portal designed to unify clinical and administrative pathways. The goal: provide patients with a smooth, simple, and reassuring experience while easing the administrative burden on healthcare teams.

Innovating to improve patient experience

Each year, ELSAN facilities care for nearly 5 million patients, supported by 28,000 healthcare professionals and 7,500 private physicians. To ensure consistent quality of care at this scale, ELSAN continuously reimagines how care pathways are organized.

“Patient experience depends on multiple factors—treatment, reception, coordination, and follow-up. The more complex the journey, the higher the risk of breakdowns or administrative overload,” explains Thomas Daubigny.
“Our goal is to provide each patient with a smooth, personalized journey, free from unnecessary obstacles.”

This vision led to the creation of Mon Espace Elsan Care: a digital care pathway available via a web solution that centralizes information, streamlines processes, and connects all stakeholders involved in care delivery.

A digital journey co-designed with patients and healthcare professionals

Co-developed with frontline teams and patients, the digital solution was first tested in pilot sites before being progressively rolled out across ELSAN’s private hospitals. It supports patients throughout the entire care journey, before, during, and after hospitalization.

“The tool isn’t just for patients. It’s also designed for healthcare professionals and administrative teams,” says Audrey Houssé, Quality, Safety & Environment Manager at Polyclinique Jean Villar in Bordeaux.
“It helps patients access key information ahead of their stay and provides better support for returning home.”

The objective is clear: to reassure patients and reduce their mental load, while facilitating care coordination. Prescriptions, medical reports, preparation guidelines, appointment reminders, and follow-up information are all brought together in one intuitive, personalized interface

Interoperability, security, and scalability with Microsoft Azure

To build the solution, ELSAN turned to Microsoft Azure services, specifically Azure API Management and  Service Bus. These tools enable easy integration with the group’s complex hospital information systems, while ensuring strong data security and scalability.

“Our IT system is vast, heterogeneous, and partly siloed. We needed a solution that could connect our existing tools while maintaining data security and performance,” explains Jennifer Goulette, Chief Product Officer at ELSAN.
“Azure API Management and Service Bus allow us to securely exchange data across our entire healthcare ecosystem.”

Microsoft teams supported the project’s critical phases through planning workshops, technical sessions, and architectural guidance.

“Microsoft’s expertise was key to quickly delivering the solution. Their support helped us navigate complex challenges with greater efficiency and peace of mind,” confirms Jennifer Goulette.

Relieving the burden on healthcare teams

For healthcare professionals, the application is a game changer. Essential information is now centralized and synthesized, making care delivery easier and reducing repetitive administrative work.
“This tool helps us better organize our work and focus on cases that require special attention,” says Audrey Houssé. “The time savings are significant—and they directly contribute to better care quality.”

Care teams can also share personalized advice with patients on treatment follow-up, hygiene, or post-op care. Everything is designed to foster patient autonomy while strengthening the caregiver relationship.
“The solution is designed to deliver the right information at the right time,” adds Audrey Houssé.
“It helps patients move through their journey with confidence and become active participants in their care.”

Technology that puts people first

By streamlining processes and lightening the administrative load, digital tools enable healthcare workers to refocus on what truly matters: human connection.
“Instead of chasing missing documents, we can spend time listening, supporting, and caring for patients,” says Jennifer Goulette.

On the patient side, feedback has also been overwhelmingly positive. The app’s interface is described as clear, intuitive, and reassuring.
“The app allowed me to prepare everything in advance, from home. I received timely information. It was very reassuring,” shares Amélie, a patient who used the solution.

The enthusiasm from users has exceeded expectations.
“We were pleasantly surprised by how well patients and teams received the solution,” concludes Jennifer Goulette.
“It meets a real need and is already proving to be a powerful driver of continuous care quality improvement.”
