Banco do Brasil improves collaboration and security with Windows 11 Enterprise

Banco do Brasil needed to standardize the employee experience to increase efficiency and collaboration.

The institution migrated thousands of devices to Windows 11, unifying the platform with modern and secure tools.

Standardization has improved collaboration and security, increased Microsoft Teams usage by 117%, and reduced tickets with authentication via Windows Hello.

Banco do Brasil

Banco do Brasil, a company with two centuries of history, remains one of the most modern and solid financial institutions in the world. Headquartered in Brasília and listed on the B3 stock exchange, Banco do Brasil operates across various sectors, including retail, wholesale, investments, insurance, and asset management, while maintaining robust international operations.

During the pandemic, Banco do Brasil successfully transitioned thousands of employees to remote work, which led to increased use of Microsoft Teams. As employees returned to the office, the need for a consistent experience across different environments became evident.

“Today we have a range of security features with Windows, such as native disk encryption, BitLocker, biometric authentication, and facial recognition, which obviously provide more security than using a password. I see this as an evolution.”

Challenge: Fragmented digital experience

Banco do Brasil, with its more than 86,000 employees spread across thousands of service locations, faced significant challenges in delivering a seamless digital experience due to the use of different operating systems. This fragmentation limited user experience and collaboration. The pandemic highlighted the urgent need to equip employees with the right tools, standardize the digital journey, and create a work environment adapted to the hybrid model—which also needed to be more secure.

“I’d highlight the authentication aspect. The use of single sign-on between web applications and the operating system, enabled by Microsoft Entra through Windows Hello for Business—whether via facial or fingerprint biometrics—has improved the user experience.”

Solution: Unified digital experience

To address these challenges, Banco do Brasil implemented a consistent work experience across the entire organization in just four months—from headquarters to thousands of branches across the country. This included adopting modern tools and technologies such as Windows 11 EnterpriseMicrosoft Teams, and Microsoft 365 E5. These solutions significantly improved collaboration, user experience, management, and security within the organization, ensuring that all employees, regardless of location, have access to the same high-quality digital tools and resources.

In addition to enhancing the collaborative environment and enabling native use of Microsoft solutions, the migration also significantly increased the security of Banco do Brasil’s devices. The implementation of Windows 11 Enterprise brought advanced security features such as disk encryption with BitLocker and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, which offers real-time protection, reduces the surface area for cyberattacks, and enables conditional access based on devices.

The use of Microsoft Entra also enabled the application of advanced security and identity features such as Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and Conditional Access, ensuring that employee data remains protected even in cases of device loss or theft.

Modern tools like Microsoft Intune and Windows Autopilot allowed for centralized and flexible management—both in deploying Windows 11 Enterprise across thousands of branches and in supporting devices post-migration, wherever they are: in branches, offices, or home offices.

The integration between Microsoft Entra and Microsoft Intune enabled native cloud management of new devices, overcoming the authentication and security barriers of on-premises environments and shifting the security focus to identity.

“With the use of Windows Enterprise, we saw an improvement in user experience that led to one of the main benefits: a 117% increase in daily message exchanges through Microsoft Teams, showing more effective and frequent communication among employees. People are now communicating more.”

Immediate benefits: Greater collaboration and security with Windows 11 Enterprise

The adoption of Windows Hello for Business, with facial and fingerprint biometric authentication, reduced support calls and simplified the login process. Security was enhanced with disk encryption and native system features.

“Today we have a range of security features with Windows, such as native disk encryption, BitLocker, biometric authentication, and facial recognition, which obviously provide more security than using a password. I see this as an evolution,” explains Djalma Otavio Moreaux Nunes, IT Manager and one of the initiative’s leads.

"I’d highlight the authentication aspect. The use of single sign-on between web applications and the operating system, enabled by Microsoft Entra through Windows Hello for Business—whether via facial or fingerprint biometrics—has improved the user experience,” adds Ricardo Rocha Pires, IT Infrastructure Specialist.

Including more than 30,000 branch devices in the scope resulted in a significant shift. Before the migration, workstations used other operating systems, which limited collaboration to the web experience and created inconsistencies in device management, security, and provisioning.

During the migration, challenges included adapting applications and provisioning Windows Enterprise in branches—especially in remote locations with limited tech infrastructure. Ultimately, the goal was achieved: migrating devices to a modern operating system with automated provisioning using Windows Autopilot and cloud management via Entra ID and Microsoft Intune.

Another impactful result was the increased use of Microsoft Teams, reflecting more effective collaboration across teams. “With the use of Windows Enterprise, we saw an improvement in user experience that led to one of the main benefits: a 117% increase in daily message exchanges through Microsoft Teams, showing more effective and frequent communication among employees. People are now communicating more,” highlights Djalma.

Next Steps: AI and automation with Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Copilot Studio

Banco do Brasil continues to invest in its digital transformation, with the migration to Windows 11 Enterprise serving as the foundation for a broader shift focused on security, process automation, and the adoption of new technologies. The goal is to accelerate productivity, ensure security, and continuously enhance the digital employee experience.

“The institution is making significant investments in security and in automating support and service processes to speed up responses and implement self-remediation within the work environment,” explains Djalma Otavio Moreaux Nunes.

“The adoption of advanced technologies, such as generative AI, is being carried out with great control and security to ensure the integrity of processes,” reinforces Ricardo Rocha Pires.
