ENGIE Impact identifies risk more accurately using Azure Analytics and AI Services

ENGIE Impact was exploring AI solutions to streamline its data and customer billing processes, aiming to drive greater value for its customers.

The company adopted Azure AI Foundry, Azure Databricks, and Microsoft 365 Copilot, leveraging AI to automate workflows and extract insights from data.

ENGIE Impact is unlocking greater value for its clients, improving billing processes and enhancing data analysis to provide a better understanding of the future.

ENGIE Impact

On a mission to accelerate sustainability for the world’s largest organizations, ENGIE Impact blends consulting expertise with the power of data, enabling its clients to reduce costs, ensure compliance, and shape a more sustainable future.

To deliver this unique approach, ENGIE Impact is leveraging Azure AI Foundry, Azure Databricks, and Microsoft 365 Copilot, using AI to streamline operations and unlock data-driven insights that meet the needs of its clients.

Changing the world, one data point at a time

“We leverage data, people expertise, and technology to enable companies to progress in their sustainability goals. By collecting resource data—across energy, water, waste, and carbon—we help our customers transform their impact on the world,” says Craig Evans, Senior Strategy & Business Transformation Advisor at ENGIE Impact.

With a global client base that includes twenty percent of the Fortune 500, ENGIE Impact is dedicated to helping organizations take action on sustainability and respond to our changing climate. Its solutions deliver a holistic approach, offering expense and resource data management, carbon reporting and disclosure, and energy management. For clients, ENGIE Impact answers the question: “is your data working for you?”

“We work with thousands of vendors, each with different rate schedules, language capabilities, and unique criteria,” says Evans. "One of our biggest challenges has been how to manage and make sense of such vast volumes of data.”

For ENGIE Impact, managing data at this scale involves 31,000 vendors across 600,000+ global sites and processing $1.8 million invoices each month. The sheer complexity of this operation led the company to explore smarter, more efficient solutions able to streamline processes, whilst ensuring compliance with data regulations.

Aligning values, increasing impact

“We chose Microsoft not just for their cutting-edge technology, but because their values and vision for sustainability align with ours,” says Vincent Manier, Head of Product, Data and Innovation at ENGIE Impact.

ENGIE Impact is committed to finding technology partners that align with their goals. Microsoft, having a solid vision for its own sustainability goals and offering solutions built on green software engineering principles, offered ENGIE Impact the chance to tour its Innovation Lab at Redmond, WA. Through an intensive workshop, opportunities were developed and explored to really move the needle, such as leveraging Microsoft Sustainability Manager (MSM), for its out-of-the-box AI capabilities and advanced scope 3 functionalities.

Strengthening the mission using AI

“As a market leader, we want to enhance our existing data methods and, ultimately, better support our clients. AI emerged as a key enabler for this, helping us stay ahead of the competition and continue to be that leading North Star,” says Evans.

Driven to continue leading in client satisfaction, ENGIE Impact placed AI at the core of its strategy and adopted Azure AI Foundry, Azure Databricks, and Microsoft 365 Copilot to transform operations. This approach is reinforced with agents that streamline business processes and reshape data workflows, empowering employees to save time, so they can focus on what matters most: supporting clients on their path to a greener future.

A secure, unified platform for data engineering

“Our machine learning ecosystem is in Azure Databricks. Using this solution, we’re able to run predictions daily and identify account risk better than our previous process—an improvement of 13x,” says Joel Travis, Data Scientist at ENGIE Impact.

To accelerate data operations, ENGIE Impact is leveraging Azure Databricks, using its data lakehouse and AI capabilities to process, manage, and store data, and build machine learning (ML) models for smarter analysis. With this solution, the company can also consolidate its vast data footprint, ensuring data quality—and more accurate insights.

“We’re really excited about Azure Databricks. As we create more sophisticated ML models, this will require high quality data, which Databricks can help us to achieve,” highlights Judy Cheng, Data Science Manager at ENGIE Impact.

Sitting within Microsoft Azure, both Azure AI Foundry and Azure Databricks offer a secure, scalable space for data and AI innovation, with governance features to ensure compliance with regulations such as CCPR and GDPR. In addition, native connectivity between each solution provides a more unified view of data, delivering speed and simplicity.

Cheng illustrates this, “Having our data in the cloud is key to data quality. It allows us to work at scale without the technical limitations of on-premises.”

Travis elaborates, “Azure enables us to deliver data-driven value quickly, without context switching, all in the same secure spot.”

Fostering a culture of innovation with Copilot

“Our work is super cross-functional. As we move further into our AI journey, Copilot is a key part of the cultural transformation, enabling our teams to get involved with intelligent tooling,” says Adrien Couton, Head of Product Strategy and Innovation at ENGIE Impact.

Keen to drive a full AI transformation, ENGIE Impact deployed Microsoft 365 Copilot, driving efficiency across multiple teams within the business. Starting with a trial to assess potential, the company broadened its adoption after seeing the value Copilot could bring in terms of workflow automation, client services, and “no code” innovation. Now, multiple functions are reaping the benefits of this solution.

Couton highlights this, “Copilot is helping every function of our business. For example, members of our HR team are building agents to answer questions from employees, with minimal support. To me, that's a perfect illustration of how AI delivers value.”

Employees at ENGIE Impact are playing an active role in discussions around AI and Copilot, meeting monthly to discuss how to gain maximum value from these solutions. This is creating a collaborative, tech-driven culture, with different teams and functions coming together to share prompts, techniques, and use cases.

“It's been really nice seeing how different teams can use Copilot to get deeper into their solutions,” says Travis. “During one of our discussions, one colleague shared how they’re using it to drive more value from code in Power BI, helping them to create a much more engaging solution for the client.”

Shaping the future of sustainability intelligence

“AI has the potential to transform sustainability by enabling real-time understanding. Now, we can anticipate what lies ahead and be a true partner to our clients in a world of growing complexity,” says Couton.

By embracing AI and the cloud, ENGIE Impact is strengthening both its client services and internal culture, driving continuous improvement and innovation. With these cutting-edge technologies, the company is now well-positioned to lead the next era of intelligent sustainability, delivering the insights organizations need to decarbonize, lower energy costs, and reduce environmental impact.

This forward-looking vision is shared by Microsoft, whose tools and expertise enable ENGIE Impact to anticipate challenges and adapt to evolving customer expectations. Together, they are empowering organizations, driving deeper analysis, quicker decisions, and valuable data insights to shape a more sustainable future.
