Multitude migrates to Azure to power a modern financial cloud platform built for growth

Multitude had outgrown its physical infrastructure. Scaling was slow, maintenance was heavy, and outages posed operational risk. It needed a secure, compliant platform with real-time insight and capacity for future AI demands.

It rebuilt its platform on Azure using AKS, managed databases, Azure Databricks, and GitHub. This cloud-native architecture standardized operations, improved scalability, strengthened compliance, and created an AI-ready data foundation.

Data processing is now 25% faster, maintenance work is cut in half, throughput is up 90%, and production incidents are down 75% with zero outages. Teams deliver faster and operate with far greater stability and confidence.

In fintech, rapid growth often brings unexpected friction. Multitude had reached a stage of expansion where its infrastructure, once a bastion of security and predictability, was becoming its biggest constraint. As a licensed European fintech and digital bank, the company rapidly expanded across more than a dozen countries, delivering digital banking and credit services to over 400,000 customers in 17 countries. With this growth, its daily data volume surged into hundreds of millions of data points each day. This massive scale, combined with the strict need for flawless service and daily regulatory reporting, pushed its on-premises infrastructure to its limits. 

“We were running at the peak of our physical infrastructure's capacity,” recalls Kornel Kabele, Chief Technology Officer at Multitude. “It made our future expansions very slow and introduced an operational risk we had to address.” The company needed a secure, reliable, and inherently scalable foundation to serve as a platform for a future driven by real-time data and AI. Leadership understood that to continue delivering high-quality financial services, a fundamental shift was necessary—one that required both a technological and a cultural leap forward. Teams wanted to react faster, unlock new data-driven capabilities, and prepare for emerging regulatory requirements.  

Building a scalable foundation in Azure

Multitude’s rapid growth exposed the limits of its traditional setup. Engineers were spending too much time maintaining hardware, juggling procurement cycles, and context-switching across tasks. This created an operational burden for people who should be building services, not managing infrastructure. 

To move past those limits, Multitude migrated to Microsoft Azure and redesigned its platform for long-term scalability and resilience. The goal was a scalable environment for business, supporting heavier data and regulatory demands, and providing a more reliable operational baseline. “After we ran our proof of concepts, Azure was the direction we needed to go,” notes Juraj Žabka, Head of Technology—Engineering & Operations at Multitude. “It gave us the stability and scalability the old environment simply couldn’t provide.”

Modernizing applications and data for cloud scale

The company then began rebuilding its application layer on a cloud foundation built for consistent scalability. Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) gave Multitude a unified way to run and manage its containerized services, replacing the hardware-bound processes that slowed development. With workloads running on AKS, the company can scale automatically and work across environments without custom fixes or manual reconfiguration. Žabka says autoscaling was a breakthrough for the team. “We simply couldn’t do this before,” he explains. “Now we scale when we need to, and it removes bottlenecks that used to slow us down.” He adds, “AKS quickly became our backbone. It standardized how we run services and lets us focus on development over infrastructure.” 

As applications moved into AKS, Multitude updated the data layer to match. The company uses Azure Database for PostgreSQL and Azure Database for MySQL for its core workloads, choosing managed services to eliminate patching, scaling, and maintaining physical servers. These services also support regulatory obligations with built-in security controls and high availability. Matej Sokol, Head of Technology—Platform & IT Support at Multitude, says the change was immediate. “Azure Database for PostgreSQL helped us reduce operational work,” he says. “A lot of the routine tasks like patching and server maintenance simply went away. It scaled with our needs and kept us compliant without heavy maintenance.” 

To support analytics and machine learning, Multitude implemented Azure Databricks to process and transform large data volumes. Azure Databricks provides a unified platform for data at scale. Sokol notes this opened the door for what comes next. “With Azure Databricks, we can work with data much faster,” he explains. “It prepares us for the AI capabilities we’ll need going forward.” 

Security and compliance shaped every architectural choice. The company needed a platform to satisfy strict European regulatory frameworks, including DORA and the emerging EU AI Act. Azure’s identity controls, monitoring, and built-in security reduced manual effort while strengthening Multitude’s compliance posture. “Azure gave us the security and compliance maturity we needed,” Kabele emphasizes. “It let us grow faster without taking on new operational risk.”

Elevating engineering through GitHub's AI powered platform

The move to Azure also triggered a company-wide cultural shift. Teams embraced more automation, clearer processes, and a more product-focused way of working. Engineering now builds and releases software using cleaner workflows and faster delivery cycles. GitHub Enterprise standardizes code reviews, automates deployments through GitHub Actions, and consolidates pipelines—cutting CI/CD maintenance by more than 50%, giving teams more time to build.

With a standardized software development lifecycle and robust quality gates, Multitude has improved delivery quality and reliability. The company uses GitHub Advanced Security to reduce code vulnerabilities and GitHub Copilot to help the 90% of engineers using it work faster with more consistent results. “GitHub helps us raise our engineering standards,” Žabka explains. “It makes our processes more consistent and gives teams confidence in the new environment.”

By the end of their  migration, Multitude had established a secure, scalable foundation designed for long-term growth. Throughout the transition, the team adopted a hybrid operating model, running workloads across both on-premises and Azure environments to maintain stability during live operations. This approach made it possible to migrate more than 400 components across all environments while keeping customer services available. With AKS at the core, modern databases powering applications, and an AI-ready data layer, the company now operates at a speed and scale that matches its ambitions. 

Turning infrastructure gains into business momentum 

The shift to Azure has created measurable gains across Multitude’s operations. “Our data warehouse runs 25% faster now and consistently meets regulatory and business delivery targets,” says Kabele. “With Azure, we’re reacting to the market in real time instead of waiting for yesterday’s numbers.” He adds that some processes that took months now take minutes, including preparing data for analysis and supporting new partner integrations. Time to value for major integrations has improved by about six months.

Reliability has experienced the sharpest change. In financial services, even an hour of disruption can affect thousands of customers and carry significant revenue impact, along with longer-term trust risks. As Multitude’s physical infrastructure approached its limits, the platform engineering team was on weekly alert for capacity issues. “We reduced production incidents by 75%, and we have zero outages across environments,” highlights Žabka. “That stability is something we never had before. Azure lets us focus on new features instead of firefighting.”

Engineering velocity also looks different. “With Azure, we deliver business value faster and more reliably. We increased our application build and deployment throughput by 90% and cut our maintenance effort by 50%,”
Žabka notes. He points out the way Azure’s managed services and the company’s cloud-native architecture removed entire classes of issues that previously consumed engineers’ time. “It’s a dramatic shift for us.”

Multitude is already seeing gains in its AI workloads. After migrating its core credit scoring model to Azure Machine Learning, the company reduced related costs by 50% while improving model reliability for regulatory reporting.

Support from Azure Accelerate and migration partner Radiante.cloud helped reduce the cost and complexity of the move. Azure Accelerate funding covered a majority of migration costs, allowing Multitude to execute a comprehensive, well-architected transition from the start. Expert input combined with strong internal domain knowledge ensured discovery, design, and optimization were done right, delivering results quickly and securely.

Looking ahead, Multitude is now exploring new innovations using Microsoft’s AI stack, including conversational AI for customer support, real-time translations, and AI agents for employee productivity.

For Kabele, the cultural impact on Multitude is just as important as the technical one. “Now, instead of managing limitations, [we] are focused on growth and innovation,” he concludes. “We can scale faster... and build for the future with confidence.”
