Detective William Murdoch is running for his life from a pair of British security agents through the streets of Bristol, England. Taking refuge in a pub owned by the lovely Anna Fulford, Murdoch admits that he may indeed be the murderer the agents accuse him of being. Meanwhile, in Toronto, Inspector Thomas Brackenreid, Constable George Crabtree and Medical Examiner Dr. Julia Ogden have no idea what has become of Murdoch, missing now a week, until they find evidence that he was at the scene of an unidentified murdered man.

Murdoch is called in to investigate the murder of police constable Felix Cooper in Toronto's Chinatown. Findings from Ogden's post-mortem lead Murdoch and Cooper's beat partner, Constable Randall Townsend, to investigate herbalist Feng Choy who was paying bribes to Cooper. But Murdoch suspects that Choy is being set up and that somehow his teenaged granddaughter figures in the murder. Murdoch's dogged investigation into the fearful and mistrusting world of Chinese immigrants will lead him to expose the dark underbelly of police corruption and could prove to be both career and life threatening.

In a Masonic Temple, Victor Bernard drops dead during his initiation ceremony. Witnessing the suspicious death are fellow Masons Brackenreid and Crabtree. They have to pull rank to convince their fellow members to allow Murdoch, a catholic, and Ogden, a woman, into the temple to conduct their investigation of a closed and secretive membership which includes many of the city's movers and shakers. As the investigation proceeds, Ogden discovers that Victor Bernard harboured a stunning secret that may have been led to his murder. Murdoch ultimately discovers the identity of the killer and the tragic irony that led to Bernard's death.

While his mother is distracted by a mugging in a downtown Toronto park, Inspector Brackenreid's son Bobby is kidnapped. As he investigates the case and deals with a stressed and agitated Brackenreid, Murdoch realizes that the kidnappers took the wrong boy - their intended target was Bobby's playmate, the son of hard-nosed brewery magnate, Henry Santon, a man with many enemies. Brackenreid and Murdoch both know the odds of Bobby's safe return are against them: if the kidnappers realize they have mistakenly abducted the son of a poorly-paid policeman they will likely kill Bobby. But, as Murdoch discovers, there is more at stake to the kidnappers than money.

When Murdoch interviews Charlotte's mother and brother he realizes he needs an expert in the fledgling field of psychology to get through to the increasingly unpredictable Charlotte. Murdoch brings in the well-known 'alienist' Dr. Roberts to help him determine what is happening to Charlotte. It's only then that Murdoch uncovers the horrifying and grisly family secrets that lie at the root of her problems.

Investigating the murder of a security guard and robbery of a priceless Rembrandt draws Murdoch into the vibrant world of power couple James and Sally Pendrick. James shares Murdoch's love of science and engineering and seems either oblivious to or unconcerned by the fact that the free-spirited and beautiful Sally has eyes for Murdoch. As the owner of the stolen Rembrandt, Sally willingly guides Murdoch through the heady world of art theft and fraud. As Murdoch investigates he suspects that the theft and murder were the work of someone inside Sally's bohemian circle of artists and art experts. He gets his man, but is nearly killed by the thief/murderer. Fortunately James Pendrick shows up in time and kills Murdoch's would be assailant leaving Murdoch to wonder just how fortuitous James' timing is. One thing is sure, Murdoch and the Pendricks will cross paths again.

The circus is in town and, as is often the case, chaos isn't too far behind Barnett's Royal Travelling Circus. But this time the chaos leads to tragedy when a tiger eats its trainer, the beautiful Kitty Walker. Suspecting this is more than a tragic accident, Murdoch hauls the whole colourful lot into the precinct: including the arrogant Leoline the lion-faced man, the slick and handsome Jake the Magician, the gorgeous but scarred Ivy, various other freaks and frauds and Athena, a spider monkey with a secret who wins over the usually hard-nosed Brackenreid. When Ogden confirms his suspicion that Kitty's death was no accident, Murdoch zeroes in on an apparent love triangle amongst the various performers and learns that there are big differences between the freaks and the frauds.

At Sally Pendrick's invitation, Murdoch and Dr Ogden find themselves at a meeting of the Toronto Eugenics Society, a group of the city's scientific intelligentia - led by James Pendrick - who dream of a creating a superior breed of human. The guest speaker is none other than the great science fiction writer, HG Wells. On his arm is Ruby Ogden, Julia's younger sister. Julia's surprise and Well's speech are put on hold with the horrifying discovery of severed limb. Murdoch's investigation identifies the deceased as Linus Malling, an ardent Eugenics supporter. While the Ogden sisters clash over Ruby's close association with the married Wells, Julia must contend with Wells' bold advances. Meanwhile, Murdoch suspects that Linus Malling's mysterious rejection of Eugenics may have led James Pendrick to murder him.

Workers building an abutment for a bridge across the Don River make a grusesome discovery: the almost perfectly preserved bodies of a man and a woman. Only when Ogden does some tests does the truth emerge; the bodies have been preserved by the acidic, anaerobic swamps that bordered the old Don River. But how long? Years? Decades? Then Murdoch learns that one of McTavish's erotic models was none other than Sally Pendrick, the vivacious wife of Murdoch's nemesis, the industrialist James Pendrick. Did Pendrick kill McTavish? Murdoch arrests Pendrick for McTavish's murder and for an attempt on Sally's life. Pendrick swears he's innocent, a claim Murdoch dismisses outright; a decision he'll come to regret.

Murdoch is convinced that James Pendrick is involved, despite the fact that he is in jail and set to hang for murder, but then a stunning series of events reveals the real mastermind behind the weapon, the Rembrandt theft, and the murder of the photographer, McTavish. A final confrontation sets off the death ray once again, but this time Murdoch is ready. Meanwhile, Dr. Ogden accepts an offer of employment in Buffalo, New York and reveals a heartbreaking secret.
