Description

On January 11, 2007, Sydney adventurer Andrew McAuley set out on a mission to become the first person to kayak from Australia to New Zealand. After a lonely month at sea, this mission would end in tragedy. Whilst Andrew's body was never recovered, his kayak was, as were video tapes documenting his extraordinary and terrifying adventure. These recovered tapes, together with footage of McAuley's preparation and interviews with his support crew including wife Vicki McAuley, forms the basis of this moving story of McAuley's attempt to cross 1600km of one of the most treacherous and unforgiving oceans on Earth - the Southern Ocean stretch of the Tasman Sea. Solo is a stirring psychological portrait of McAuley's unshakeable need to claim a first and to conquer the unknown - a need that would ultimately cost him his life.
