Hanmi

Hanmi Pharmaceutical is a Korean R&D-centric biopharmaceutical company. The company operates the largest pipeline of innovative new drugs among Korean pharmaceutical companies, with over 30 candidates in development, and was the first in the pharmaceutical industry to obtain ISO 27001 certification, the international standard for information security management systems (ISMS). This certification signifies that the company’s management systems for protecting research data and personal information meet international standards. As a leader in both pharmaceutical technology and corporate operations, Hanmi Pharmaceutical recently adopted Microsoft 365 Copilot (M365 Copilot) and Surface Copilot+ PCs as part of its company-wide AI transformation project.

“We are progressing through a phased AI transformation, and in 2025, we are building an AI PC environment by adopting M365 Copilot and Surface Copilot+ PCs. This initiative is enhancing work efficiency across the enterprise, especially by providing our sales team with a workspace free from physical constraints.”

Realizing Modern Work with M365 Copilot and Surface Copilot+ PCs

BumJin Kim, Group Leader of the Information Strategy Group at Hanmi Science, explains the background of adopting Surface Copilot+ PCs:

“As a company committed to both technological innovation and transparent operations, Hanmi Pharmaceutical is equally focused on creating a more flexible modern work environment. We are progressing through a phased AI transformation, and in 2025, we are building an AI PC environment by adopting M365 Copilot and Surface Copilot+ PCs. This initiative is enhancing work efficiency across the enterprise, especially by providing our sales team with a workspace free from physical constraints.”

All sales personnel in the field have been equipped with 5G-enabled Surface Copilot+ PCs, enabling a connected digital work environment anytime, anywhere. While Hanmi Pharmaceutical previously utilized tablets for fieldwork, security limitations often prevented employees from accessing internal systems externally, requiring them to return to the office to complete their tasks. Now, using the Surface Copilot Key, employees can quickly and intuitively search for the information they need while accessing and managing cloud-based storage like OneDrive and SharePoint from outside the office, significantly improving sales efficiency and creating more opportunities. This has enhanced mobility in the work environment while maintaining robust security.

YongBae Kim from the Sales Planning Team at Hanmi Pharmaceutical states that streamlining workflows with M365 and M365 Copilot has not only increased processing speed but also enhanced existing workflows, significantly boosting the team’s overall productivity and focus.

“In the past, we managed performance and handled work requests via email or messaging, but now we save forms on SharePoint and collaborate in real time, saving time and effort. Additionally, we are leveraging the town hall and breakout room features on Teams to suit different work situations, enabling more efficient meetings and training sessions.”
The active use of Teams at Hanmi Pharmaceutical is not limited to sales team. Naeun Kim from the Data Strategy Group at Hanmi Pharmaceutical shares that using Teams for online meetings has brought more than just convenience, resulting in overall improvements in work efficiency.

“The Data Strategy Group is responsible for marketing as well as business development for domestic pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Due to the nature of our work, we frequently hold meetings with external partners, and features such as scheduling, automated meeting summaries, and documentation have greatly reduced the steps required for communication with partners.”

Workflow Connectivity and Integration Enabled by Surface Copilot+ PCs

Powered by Qualcomm chipsets and NPUs, Surface Copilot+ PCs deliver robust AI PC performance by seamlessly utilizing large language models (LLMs) running on Azure Cloud alongside small language models (SLMs) embedded on the device. Enhanced Windows Search enables easy file retrieval, Cocreator allows real-time AI image generation and editing, and Live Captions provide audio translation for over 40 languages. The Surface Copilot+ PC, designed to deliver the best experience of M365 and M365 Copilot, boosts workplace flexibility and mobility with excellent battery life and strong security features.

Hanmi Pharmaceutical is applying these technologies in real-world work environments, and by adopting Surface Copilot+ PCs alongside M365 and M365 Copilot to build its AI PC environment, the company expects three key effects from a macro perspective:

First, Surface-based work efficiency and integration in digital transformation. Surface devices are optimized for Windows OS, enabling seamless integration with M365. As seen in the sales team example, using the pen and detachable keyboard allows real-time data input in the field, improving sales productivity. Additionally, there is no need for separate customization for mobile versions, making IT operations more efficient.

Second, workflow connectivity enabled by M365 and M365 Copilot. YongWook Lee from the AX Part, Information Strategy Group at Hanmi Science emphasizes this aspect:

“The value of M365 is maximized when employees organically connect individual applications and build their own workflows. The Information Strategy Group at Hanmi Science is aiming for a mindset that integrates Copilot across M365 workflows, moving beyond the use of single prompts. To support this, we host Power Platform workshops and run early adopter programs and power user communities.”

Third, centralized endpoint security policies through Microsoft Intune. By leveraging Microsoft Intune, initially applied to Surface devices, the company enables centralized control, enhancing physical security through device location tracking and remote data wiping in the event of loss, based on connection data between each employee’s Microsoft Entra ID and mobile device IP. The company also plans to continuously improve its app distribution and unauthorized access monitoring system via the Intune Company Portal.

In addition, Microsoft Sentinel has been introduced across the Hanmi Group to enhance information security through comprehensive security information and event management (SIEM). Through real-time threat detection, the company is ensuring internal safety and protecting customer personal information while planning to build a more advanced security system by adopting next-generation AI-based security solutions in the future.

“We are aiming for a mindset that integrates Copilot across M365 workflows, moving beyond the use of single prompts. To support this, we host Power Platform workshops and run early adopter programs and power user communities.”

A Roadmap for Successful AI Transformation

Hanmi Pharmaceutical’s AI transformation goes beyond simply adopting technology, aiming to drive organizational cultural change. It pursues a people-centered AI transition that brings about tangible results through phased implementation.

As the first step, in 2024, the company formed the AX Task Force with key personnel from the sales, marketing, manufacturing, and research departments to quickly learn the latest AI trends and conduct proof-of-concept (PoC) trials on technologies with high adoption potential. This significantly enhanced AI understanding across the organization.

In 2025, Hanmi Pharmaceutical is focusing on building an AI PC environment by adopting M365 Copilot and Surface Copilot+ PCs, while prioritizing productivity gains and the cultivation of citizen developers, explains BoGyun Choi from the AX Part, Information Strategy Group at Hanmi Science.

“We provide Power Platform training to volunteers from each department to cultivate citizen developers. This bottom-up approach empowers frontline employees to create the solutions they need themselves, reducing dependency on IT while spreading digital capabilities across the organization.”

By 2026, Hanmi Pharmaceutical plans to empower citizen developers in each department to autonomously create the solutions they need, advancing toward building agents that serve as personal assistants using Copilot Studio, Power Platform, and Azure AI Foundry.

Hanmi Pharmaceutical’s AI transformation is not a short-term project but an ongoing journey that supports its corporate vision of “continuous innovation,” with Microsoft serving as a trusted partner every step of the way.
