思い切って挑んだインターン。驚きと発見に満ちた 2 か月の経験

大学院では、画像処理の研究室に所属。カメラの映像をもとに物体を認識するアルゴリズムや、VR（バーチャルリアリティ）の研究に従事しました。就職を考えた時、いちばん意識したのは自由な風土。外資系の IT 企業が念頭にありましたが、そもそも Microsoft が日本で新卒採用していることを知りませんでしたし、特別な会社というイメージ。特に Microsoft は「ドライで堅い会社」というイメージを勝手につくりあげ、どこか近寄りがたい印象を持っていたからです。でも研究室の 1 年上の先輩が MSD（マイクロソフトディベロップメント）に内定しているのを知り、「一度チャレンジしてみよう」と、サマーインターンに応募しました。もしあの時、応募をためらっていれば、今の私はなかったはず。サマーインターンは、私にとって人生の転機になった 2 か月の経験でした。

MSD のサマーインターンに参加したのは、修士 1 年の 8 月から 9 月にかけて。一人のプログラムマネージャ（PM）として、「 Outlook.com 」のアップデートにむけた追加機能の開発を担当しました。マーケットの最新の動向を探り、どのような機能を盛り込むべきかのアイデアを考え、スペックを作成、プロトタイプを完成させるまでが仕事。PM の実際の業務をひと通り経験できるのは、2 か月にわたる長期インターンならではの魅力です。

インターンとはいえ、今日何をするのか、細かな指示があるわけではありません。自分で行動計画を立て、スケジュール管理を行って仕事を前に進めていくことが求められます。何事においても自分で考え、判断し、主体的に行動を起こすのがMicrosoft の大原則。インターンとて、例外ではありません。でも私には、むしろそれが心地良いものに感じられました。上から言われて仕事をするのではなく、「今の問題はここだから、こう対処すべきだ」と自分の考えや意見を述べ、ディスカッションしながらプロジェクトを進めていくのが面白いし、自分の性分にあっている気がしたからです。まわりの上司や先輩方も「インターンだから」と遠ざけるのではなく、何の経験もない私のことを一人の PM として同じ目線で見てくださり、意見やアドバイスを投げかけてくれます。そんな自由でオープンな社風がとても新鮮に映り、“ドライで堅い会社”というイメージが、いかに根拠のないものであるかを痛感しました。

「Outlook.com」は、世界中のユーザーが利用するメールサービス。新機能の開発にあたっては、海外のマーケッターやエンジニアから情報提供を受け、意見交換する機会もありました。今でも覚えているのは、Microsoft の米国本社にいるリサーチャーと直接やり取りし、SNS や IM などのコミュニケーションツールの状況や最新情報についてのレクチャーを受け、専門家としての貴重な意見を聞けたこと。国籍も言葉も違う者同士が、目的とビジョンを共有し、一致協力してより良いサービスを作り上げていこうとする仕事のスケール感や醍醐味に圧倒され、「そんな環境の中で、自分も一人の仲間として仕事がしたい」という思いが日を追うごとに高まっていきました。

最終的に私が提案したのは、メール上でグループチャットや投票ができる機能。計算式のように「正解」があるわけでもなく、懸命に集めた情報や意見をもとに 1 つのアイデアをまとめ、エンジニアとともにプロトタイプとして完成させていく作業は、難しさもある反面、モノづくりの楽しみを存分に味合わせてくれました。また就活では、ともすれば「自分が何をしたいか」にばかり目が向きがち。でも本当に大切なことは「どんな人たちと一緒に仕事をするのか」、自分を取り巻く環境にあることを教えられました。サマーインターンが終了した後、他の外資系企業の説明会にも参加しましたが、気持ちが揺らぐことは一度もありませんでした。

サマーインターンへの参加がきっかけで、MSD に入社して 1 年。現在は、スマートフォン向けのスキャナアプリ「 Office Lens 」の PM を務めています。新たに追加する機能を企画するところから始まり、プログラムの設計、さらには新たなユーザーを獲得するために、どんな使い方や特徴を、どのタイミングでアピールするかといったマーケティングの仕事まで、コーディングを除くすべての業務を幅広く担当しています。「 Office Lens 」は、実は日本で生まれ、人気を集めたアプリ。これを機能面でさらに進化させ、グローバルなマーケットでも多くのユーザーから支持を集めるプロダクトへと成長させていくことが、私に与えられたミッションです。周囲の先輩方に支えられながらも、こうして 1 年目から一人の PM として自立して仕事ができるのは、 2 か月間のサマーインターンでの経験がベースにあったから。Microsoft の本当の姿に触れ、素晴らしい先輩たちとともに働けることの喜びを知ったサマーインターンは、私にとって PM としてのキャリアをスタートさせる“入口”でもありました。

「Office Lens」は、スマートフォンやタブレットで撮影した書類を、さまざまな形式の文書に記録できるスキャナアプリ。ホワイトボードや黒板、名刺、レシート、ノートなどの紙の文書を撮影して、ワードやパワーポイントの文書に変換することもできるし、取り込んだ文書からテキストデータを抽出する「 OCR 機能」にも対応しています。コアとなるのは、学生時代の私の専攻でもあった画像処理の技術。大学で学んだことを生かした仕事がしたいと考えていましたので、「 Office Lens 」の PM に起用されたのは、本当に嬉しかったです。1 年間「 Office Lens 」を担当する中で、学生時代に経験した学術研究が製品にどのように生かされ、人の役に立つのかを実際のケースから学ぶことができました。どんなに素晴らしいテクノロジーを持っていても、使ってもらわなければ意味がないと思います。そのようなテクノロジーを世の中に広め、世界中のユーザーを驚かせるようなプロダクトを発信していきたいと思っています。

In graduate school, I was in image processing laboratory. I used algorithms to recognize objects in photographs and research on VR (virtual reality). When I was thinking about finding employment, my top criteria was one with a free climate. Although foreign-affiliated IT companies were in mind, initially I did not know that Microsoft was recruiting new graduates in Japan, and it carried an image of a special company. I imagined Microsoft as a "serious and rigid company" and had an impression that I could not get anywhere near. However, I learned that my senior at the laboratory got employed in MSD (Microsoft Development), and so I told myself "Let's try at least once" and applied for the summer internship. If I were to hesitate at that time, I would never have been here now. Summer internship was a two months experience which changed my life forever.

I participated in MSD summer internship when I was in my first year of my Masters program, from August to September. As one of the program manager (PM), I was in charge of developing additional functions for "Outlook.com" update. I would explore the latest trends in the market, think of ​​what kind of functions to include, create specifications and work until the prototype was completed. Being able to experience the actual work of PM over two months, was the charm of long-term internship.

There was no detailed instruction for interns on what to do on a daily basis. We were required to proceed forward by planning our actions and manage our own schedule. To think, to judge and to act by one's own initiative is Microsoft's core principle. As an intern, this is not an exception. But for me, it was rather welcoming. Rather than being told by my superior, "The problem now is here, and this is how it should be dealt" was how I would think, expressed my opinion and had discussions, to proceed with the project. I felt this way was more interesting and natural to me. Just because I was an intern, my boss and seniors around me did not sugar-coat their actions. They treated me like a regular PM despite me having no experience, giving me their opinions and advices. This freedom and openness of the corporate style was something new to me. I was ashamed of how unfounded my image of this company was "serious and rigid ".

Outlook.com is a mail service used by users all over the world. To develop new functions, we received information from overseas marketers and engineers, and had opportunities to exchange opinions with them. Even now I remember that I got to deal directly with researchers at US headquarters in Microsoft, received a lecture on the status of the communication tools such as SNS and IM, got the latest information and heard valuable opinions from experts. I was overwhelmed by the sheer scale of work that people from different nationalities, with different languages, share the same purpose and vision, work together to provide better services. "I want to be one of them, working together in such an environment" was my thought which I wanted to realize soon. 

Finally, I suggested the e-mail has the ability to do group chat and to cast vote. There was no clear calculated "correct answer". The work of integrating one idea based on gathered information and opinion was hard and completing a prototype with the engineers was difficult, but on the other hand, it was fun to the fullest extent. At job hunting, we tend to just ask "What do I want to do?". However, I learned what is more important is "What kind of people do I work with?", which will determine what kind of environment I will be. When the summer internship was over, I also participated in briefings of other foreign-affiliated companies, but my feelings did not change.

As a result of my participation in summer internship, I joined MSD and a year has passed. Currently, I am a PM of "Office Lens", a scanner application for smartphones. I am in charge of a wide range of tasks except coding; plan new functions to be added, design programs and even do marketing jobs to acquire new users, such as finding out user's way of usage and characteristics, and when in the appropriate time to appeal to them. "Office Lens" is actually an application that was born in Japan and had gained popularity. It is a mission given to me to further evolve its functionally and make it a product favored by many users even in the global market. With the support of my surrounding seniors, I was able to work independently as a PM from the first year, because of the experience I had in the 2 months summer internship. In the summer internship, I got to know the true Microsoft and had the pleasure of working with many wonderful seniors. For me, it was also an "entrance" to start my career as a PM.

Office Lens is a scanner application that can record documents taken with smartphones and tablets, and saved in various formats. You can take snap shots of paper documents such as white boards, blackboards, business cards, receipts, notes, etc. and convert them into Word or PowerPoint documents. It also supports "OCR function" which extracts text data from imported documents. The core is image processing technology, which was also my major in my university days. I thought that I would like to do a job that took advantage of what I learned at university, so I was really happy that it was appointed as PM of "Office Lens". In a year of my charge of "Office Lens", I was able to learn from the actual case of how my academic research during my university days, was used in the product and made useful for people. I think no matter how wonderful a technology may be, it will be without meaning if not put to use. I will like to spread such technology to the world and to spread products that will surprise users all over the world.
