Anthony Nielsen

Anthony Nielsen is a principal software engineering manager in Microsoft’s Applied Sciences Group (ASG), where he leads engineering initiatives at the intersection of devices and intelligent computing.  He is particularly interested in translating research into robust, production‑ready technology.

Before rejoining Microsoft, Anthony spent over 15 years building and leading engineering teams across aerospace, consumer electronics, and autonomous systems.  Most recently, he served as the leader responsible for platform software for Amazon’s Prime Air delivery drones, guiding the MK30 aircraft from early concept through delivery‑scale operations.  Before that his work includes developing computer‑vision-based interaction modalities for Amazon Glow, leading embedded systems engineering at ChefSteps and Bose, contributing to Microsoft’s HoloLens device software, and developing UAV systems for Australia’s Defence Science and Technology Group.

Anthony holds a bachelor of engineering in electrical and electronic engineering (First Class Honours) from James Cook University, where he graduated as a University Medalist, awarded to the top cohort of Honours graduates.   His academic foundation in embedded systems, electronics, and robotics continues to shape his approach to multidisciplinary engineering leadership.

Outside of work, Anthony enjoys exploring the Pacific Northwest with his friends and family, whether it’s hiking, boating, or riding dirt bikes in the mountains.
