    The RMS Protection Tool contains PowerShell cmdlets designed for developers and IT professionals who want to use scripting mechanisms to bulk protect and unprotect documents.

    End of support notification
    The Rights Management Protection Tool is being replaced by the Azure Information Protection client. The RMS Protection tool has been retired on February 10th 2018.
    Once you install the Azure Information Protection client, visit the AIP cmdlet documentation page to learn more about the cmdlets.

    The following list identifies client and server platforms that can install the RMS Protection Tool.
    • Windows 10
    • Windows Server 2012 R2
    • Windows 8.1
    • Windows Server 2012
    • Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
    • Windows 7 SP1
    In addition, the following components are also required:
    • Latest version of AD RMS Client 2.1 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=38396)
    • PowerShell 4.0 (Download this for Windows 7 SP1 machines)
    • .NET 4.5
    • Download the installer package that matches your operating system platform, and then run it on your computer. The RMS Protection tool installs the Windows PowerShell module, RMSProtection.
    • Read the latest information about the RMS Protection cmdlets on MSDN (https://msdn.microsoft.com/library/azure/mt433195.aspx). This includes information about the supported scenarios, prerequisites, any current limitations, and links to each cmdlet help.
    • Before you begin to use the cmdlets, make sure you read the additional prerequisites and instructions for your deployment of RMS:
      • For Azure RMS: about_RMSProtection_AzureRMS (https://msdn.microsoft.com/library/azure/mt433202.aspx or "Get-Help about_RMSProtection_AzureRMS" in your Windows PowerShell session).
      • For AD RMS: about_RMSProtection_ADRMS (https://msdn.microsoft.com/library/azure/mt433203.aspx or "Get-Help about_RMSProtection_ADRMS" in your Windows PowerShell session).
