MedcoEnergi Internasional Energy Company Reduces Costs with Messaging Upgrade

Founded in 1980, MedcoEnergi Internasional (MedcoEnergi) was the first national oil company in Indonesia. With remote sites around the world, email messaging is critical for MedcoEnergi employees to collaborate on complex projects. Recently, it joined the Rapid Deployment Program for Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 to understand how the enhanced architecture reduces storage costs.

Business Needs
MedcoEnergi Internasional (MedcoEnergi) is an integrated energy company with operations in seven countries. It focuses on oil and gas exploration and production, power generation, and downstream industries, which include fuel distribution and biofuel production. The company has offices in Indonesia, Libya, Yemen, Oman, and the United States. With multiple business units and geographically distributed operations, the company relies on messaging to share information.

Several years ago, MedcoEnergi deployed Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 at its main data center in Indonesia. For collaboration, MedcoEnergi uses Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010. To provide instant messaging, presence, desktop sharing, and conferencing capabilities, the company deployed Microsoft Lync Server 2013. It also set up federation with partners and vendors who use Microsoft unified communications, so that employees could share calendars and presence information.

For voice service, MedcoEnergi deployed Lync Server enterprise voice capabilities so that employees can place voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls directly from the Microsoft Lync 2013 desktop client. In addition, employees use Exchange Unified Messaging to view voice mail and email through their Microsoft Outlook 2010 messaging and collaboration client inbox. Employees can view presence information or interact with contacts through Outlook 2010, Lync 2010, or through SharePoint Server 2010 sites.

MedcoEnergi is always looking for ways to increase efficiency and reduce costs for even its most critical business applications. For its messaging solution, it was interested in using lower-cost storage. Finally, the company has employees who work at remote locations, such as drilling sites, with unreliable Internet connections. It wanted a way for those employees to have access to email even when they are offline.

Solution
When MedcoEnergi learned about the Rapid Deployment Program for Microsoft Exchange Server 2013, it decided to evaluate the latest architecture updates and capabilities. It deployed two mailbox servers in a database availability group with four copies—one active and three passive—of the databases for disaster recovery and backup.

For storage, MedcoEnergi uses a storage-area network (SAN) solution with tiered storage. Because Exchange Server 2013 manages data efficiently and delivers a 50 percent IOPS (I/O operations per second) reduction relative to Exchange Server 2010 and high-availability technologies, MedcoEnergi can use lower-cost serial advanced technology attachment (SATA) hard disk drives for Exchange Server 2013 data. It may also use direct-attached storage (DAS).

For employees, MedcoEnergi likes Microsoft Outlook Web App, which enables access to email through most popular browsers and from devices including smartphones and tablet computers. Outlook Web App provides a consistent experience that is similar to the Outlook messaging and collaboration client on the desktop. It also provides offline access for employees in remote locations, so they can be productive at locations without a network connection.

Because MedcoEnergi has also deployed Lync Server 2013, it will take advantage of the interoperability between Lync and Exchange Server 2013. Through the Lync and Outlook clients, employees can view the universal contact card, which provides the same contact information across the solutions.

  • Provide anywhere access. Employees have access to their email and calendars from anywhere through Outlook Web App. “With Outlook Web App, we can support employees who use their own devices, and they can have offline access when they need it,” says Saefudin.
