Gary Sun

COO of Asia Pacific R&D Group | GM of Microsoft Cloud and AI China | Chairman of Microsoft Asia Pacific Technology Company

Gary Sun is the chief operating officer of Microsoft Asia Pacific R&D Group (ARD), general manager of Cloud and AI (C+AI) China, and chairman of Microsoft Asia Pacific Technology Company Ltd. (MATL). He is responsible for directing Microsoft ARD strategic initiatives and operational excellence to build an inclusive work environment and culture that ensures team members thrive and business goals are met.

Mr. Sun also provides thought leadership to product development of C+AI China to empower customer success around the world, as it accelerates digital transformation and innovation in the era of intelligent cloud and intelligent edge. C+AI China contributes to Microsoft’s core platform products for cloud computing and AI, such as Azure compute, storage and networking, intelligent data platform, AI cognitive services and solutions, IoT and edge computing, developer tools and platforms, and Dynamics 365 and e-commerce, as well as providing regional Microsoft Azure services through local datacenters in China.

Mr. Sun has been with Microsoft for more than 25 years. He began his journey at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Wash., where he led the team managing the entire company’s database servers. In 1999, Mr. Sun relocated to Asia to lead local teams focusing on Microsoft’s regional IT infrastructure and services. In 2005, he drove customer service and support for Microsoft’s Global Technical Center. There, he led engineering teams providing technical support to global customers. In 2011, Mr. Sun was selected to lead Microsoft’s consultant services, where he doubled business within two years. Mr. Sun joined ARD in 2013 to head the development of state-of-art cloud and big data innovations. Mr. Sun also managed China Azure operations before taking on the role of general manager of C+AI China in 2021. In 2022, Mr. Sun was appointed as COO of Microsoft ARD.

Prior to Microsoft, Mr. Sun held positions at Boeing and Digital Equipment Corporation, where he managed database software solutions and systems.

Mr. Sun holds an MBA in management information systems from Seattle City University and a bachelor’s degree in management information systems from the University of Houston.
