Open License purchasing is moving to CSP

Learn more about the move to the Cloud Solution Provider program

We’re moving Open License purchasing to the Cloud Solution Provider program

March 30, 2021

Simplifying the purchase experience for our customers is a core element of making it easier to do business with Microsoft. It requires a change in the way we’ve engaged with you, and in how you buy and manage your software licenses and subscriptions for online services.

In September 2020, we announced changes to the Microsoft Open License program with the introduction of perpetual software license purchases through the new commerce experience. If you’re a small or midsized customer, you can now buy software licenses from partners participating in the Cloud Solution Provider program. As a result, we’ll be ending purchases through the Open License program on December 31, 2021. If you have a small or midsize organization with little or no IT resources, Microsoft partners can provide expertise and services and build unique solutions with the latest Microsoft services and offers.

Please note: There are currently no changes to the Open Value or Open Value Subscription programs.

Why buy from a Cloud Solution Provider partner?
Buying software licenses from partners in the Cloud Solution Provider program gets you a simple purchasing experience that supports moving to the cloud at your own pace. If you’re evaluating cloud services and looking for value-added solutions, you can get guidance from a trusted advisor.

A better experience
Instead of buying perpetual software licenses through the Open License program, new purchases can be made through partners in the Cloud Solution Provider program and via the new commerce experience. With the Microsoft Customer Agreement, your purchase agreement is presented, accepted, and stored through a completely digital experience.

What do I do now if I have an Open License agreement?
You can continue to buy licenses through the Open License program through the end of the year; however, no new offers will be added starting July 1, 2021. As of January 1, 2022, you won’t be able to buy new or renew software licenses or online services through the Microsoft Open License program, even if your agreement is still active. To plan for future purchases, work with a partner in the Cloud Solution Provider program to help you decide the best next steps. Partners can offer guidance and the flexibility needed to address your hybrid use needs with both software licenses and cloud offers.

Where do I get or renew Software Assurance?
You can get software licenses with Software Assurance or renew Software Assurance through the Open Value program. Open Value offers are available now to commercial and government organizations, and in July 2021, we’ll add offers for education and nonprofit organizations so you can make new purchases through Open Value.
