Billy the Kid is probably the most misunderstood historical figure of the Old West. He was not a cold-blooded killer, nor was he a robber of trains or banks. Instead, he was a gunfighter in a feud between two factions who killed and stole from each other. Although his life was short, Billy’s legend survived and grew long after his death. A famous outlaw by age of 15, Billy grew up in a lawless and violent world, but he could read and do math, was gentle and kind, respectful to women, as well as being tough, brave and remarkably charismatic. He tried to treat all men as equal but in melting pots like New Mexico there was constant conflict between the many groups and factions of every color and creed that claimed a right to be there. From the slums of New York, the badlands of New Mexico to the great Wild West, this series explores the life, experiences and the character of Billy the Kid...his motives, ambitions and dreams.

At dawn, Billy and the Regulators ride into Lincoln, taking over its commanding heights and turning McSween’s house into their headquarters. Then a party of them ride up to Murphy’s Store to brazenly demand that Murphy, Riley and the 7 Rivers Gang all get out of town since, "we don’t want a bloodbath." They are met with a fusillade of bullets, and, for the moment, retreat back to their strongholds. The war has reached a new level. The Mexicans downtown, now armed and willing to die both for the cause and for Billy, are also a potent threat to the 7 Rivers Gang. The war has already led to a large number of casualties and, unless the army intervenes, will likely to lead to many more, including innocent men and women. But, under the Constitution, the U.S. Army is not allowed to interfere in civilian matters and other efforts to restore peace are futile.

With the arrival of U.S. Army soldiers deployed to bring peace back to Lincoln, the town is on lockdown and Billy and the Regulators have barricaded themselves in McSween's house. At their rival Murphy's House, they are celebrating what they all regard as a victory over the Regulators. Nevertheless, they fear that somehow Billy will manage to escape the trap. When a young look-out for the Regulators shoots a soldier in panic, a retaliatory plan is hatched to set the McSween house on fire. While the fire begins to kindle, Dulcinea is participating in a women’s march she helped plan in support of their menfolk. With the house now ablaze, the women try to break through the cordon but are beaten back with rifle butts and bloodied. Many are killed, but Billy and others escape. Jesse chases Billy into the woods but, once more, refuses to shoot at him and lets him go.

In the finale episode, a new Governor of Lincoln has just been appointed and his first act is to announce a general amnesty for those involved in the Lincoln County War – except those with arrest warrants for murder. Now the hunt is seriously on for Billy. Thomas Catron is frustrated by Billy’s constant ability to evade capture and devises a scheme to lure Billy back to Lincoln, where he is eventually arrested. Billy will be taken to Santa Fe for trial, but is allowed to have a final meeting with Dulcinea. She manages to smuggle a gun into the prison inside her clothing. Not only that, but she’s organized Billy’s escape. While the Regulators attack the jail, Dulcinea shoots the jailor. She and Billy make their escape… and ride into destiny.
