Description

This film takes the viewer on the personal odyssey of William McKeever into the world of the shark. His journey starts accidently stumbles on a shark tournament where hundreds of sharks are killed in these events. He is so angry at the massacre that he starts a quest to find out about sharks and answer such questions as should we care about sharks, what is happening to them and are they important? So he starts to travel and first stop is Hawaii where he interviews one of the top shark experts in the world, Dr. Carl Meyer. He discovers that great white sharks not only travel great distances but dive to depths of 4,000 feet, deeper than nuclear powered submarines. He also learns from Carl Meyer about how Asian demand for shark fin soup is leading to the killing and finning of 100 million sharks a year. His journey continues organically since each trip leads to another set of questions. With sharks dying by the millions, what happens to the marine ecosystem when they are gone? Scientists show him how sharks are crucial to the marine ecosystem. For example, tiger sharks protect sea grass which is crucial to pulling carbon dioxide from the air and helping to contain global warming. On returning to the United States after his journey around the world, he decides to leave his job and devote his life to raising awareness about sharks in books and films and stopping their destruction. The curtain on sharks is drawn back in this film to show the shark in a new light that changes forever how anyone will think about sharks.
